Florida State's bats light up the Terps

Florida State opened up conference play with a 16-6 dismantling of the Maryland Terrapins in front of 3,196 fans at Dick Howser Stadium on Friday night. Four Seminole hitters had multi-hit games, including three from Bryan Zech, two from Gibbs Chapman, four for Eddy Martinez-Esteve, and three for Matt Sauls. Ryne Malone also added a towering grand-slam homerun in the first inning.

Hunter Jones (2-1) picked up his second win of the season, going seven innings, only allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out five batters without walking any. Hunter Davis had a rocky inning of relief, and gave up four runs on four hits, while Matt DiBlasi pitched a perfect ninth to end the game.

Zech led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and scored on a double to left-center by Chapman. After both Martinez-Esteve and Aaron Cheesman were hit by pitches to load the bases, Derrick Smith reached on an infield single that scored Chapman. Malone then hit his slam over the screen in right to make it a 6-0 game.

Two innings later, the Seminole scoring machine went back to work when Malone was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on a single to center by Matt Sauls. After stealing second base, Sauls came home on Zech's second hit of the ball game.

Maryland picked up their first run in the top of the fourth when right fielder Anthony Buffone doubled to right-center, moved to third on a grounder, and scored on a single by firstbaseman Mike Constantino to cut the FSU lead to 8-1.

An inning later, the Noles got the run back when Danny Wardell doubled to right-center, moved to third on a bunt single by Sauls, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zech.

The game of one-run ping-pong continued in the top of the sixth when designated hitter Kevin Hart singled to left, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on another single by Constantino to make it 9-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Wardell walked, moved to second on a grounder, and scored on a double by Matt Sauls. Zech's third single of the game brought home Sauls, before Chapman moved him to second with a single through the right side of the infield. Martinez-Esteve then doubled in both base runners that made it a 13-2 game.  An inning later, the Terrapins did the rest of the damage when center fielder Brian Jarosinski hit a bases loaded triple off of Davis, and then scored on a single by third baseman Dan Melvin.

The Seminoles got back three of those runs in the bottom of the inning which began when Wardell walked for the third time, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Shane Robinson then walked and Zech was hit by a pitch to load the bases with only one out. After Dennis Anderson drew a walk to force in Wardell, Martinez-Esteve singled to left to score Robinson.  Danny Diaz brought home the final run of the game with a fielder's choice that scored Zech, and made it 16-6.

FSU played their fifth straight game without shortstop Stephen Drew who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. Drew is not expected back for several weeks now. Zech played the position in Drew's stead and played errorless ball, including a highlight reel leaping catch to rob the Terps of a base hit. Shane Robinson also had a defensive gem, making a spectacular diving catch late in the game.

With an 0-3 day, Cheesman's team leading fifteen game hitting streak ended, but the junior catcher did manage to draw a walk and score a run.

With the win, the Seminoles improved to 18-5 and 1-0 in conference play. The Terrapins fell to 9-8 (0-1), and have now lost nineteen straight games to Florida State. FSU will go for twenty on Saturday at 7:00 with Eddie Cannon (5-1, 2.27 ERA) on the hill for the Noles.
