No. 13 Florida State (25-9, 6-3 ACC) scored four runs in the first inning, but No. 5 Miami (24-7) rallied to win by a final score of 17-11 in front of 6,387 fans at Dick Howser Stadium on Saturday night. The crowd was the second-largest in Dick Howser Stadium history. Seminole shortstop Stephen Drew had his second straight two-homer game, going 2-for-5 with four RBI.
Seminole starter Mark Sauls (3-2) took the loss after giving up six runs on six hits in 3.2 innings of work. Sauls struck out three and walked four.
The Seminoles grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning behind back-to-back home runs from Stephen Drew and Eddy Martinez-Esteve. After Gibbs Chapman popped up to the shortstop, Aaron Cheesman singled up the middle and advanced to third on Ryne Malone's double off the right field wall. Cheesman scored on Shane Robinson's RBI-single to third and Malone came home on an errant throw to first by Gaby Sanchez. The back-to-back home runs were the first for FSU since Tony McQuade and Tony Richie belted consecutive home runs against South Alabama in the 2003 Tallahassee Regional.
Miami cut Florida State's lead to one at 4-3 with three runs in the third inning. Erick San Pedro singled down the right line and Paco Figueroa singled to center before Ryan Braun's single up the middle plated both San Pedro and Figueroa for the Hurricanes first two runs of the game. Braun stole second and later scored on Jim Burt's single to left.
Figueroa's three-run double off the fence in right with the bases loaded gave UM a 6-4 lead in the fourth and the Hurricanes never looked back. With two outs, Sanchez doubled down the right line, San Pedro walked and Brendan Katin was hit by pitch to load the bases for Figueroa's bases clearing double.
Cesar Carrillo (5-0) picked up the win for Miami in seven innings of work. Carrillo allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. All four runs came on five hits in the first inning.
The Hurricanes tallied 11 more runs for their 17-run total. The 17 runs were the most given up by Florida State since 1982 when the Seminoles fell to Georgia 21-5.
FSU scored seven runs in the final two innings including a five-run ninth. Derrick Smith's RBI-double and Louis Rojas' drew a bases loaded walk, while Drew's three-run blast with two outs in the ninth completed the scoring.
Drew (2-for-5), Martinez-Esteve (2-for-3), Robinson (2-for-4) and Smith (2-for-4) paced the Seminole offense.
Florida State and Miami will conclude the three-game series at Dick Howser Stadium on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will be carried live on Sunshine. Seminole left-hander Hunter Jones (2-2, 4.21 ERA) will face Hurricane left-hander Brandon Camardese (3-0, 3.67 ERA).
