Miami takes the series with a 4-0 shutout
by Drew Hankin

The Miami Hurricanes shutout the Florida State Seminoles 4-0 on Sunday in the final game of the three-game series at Howser Stadium. Hurricane pitchers Brandon Camardese and George Huguet limited the Noles to just two hits, both were singles by Shane Robinson. This was the first time in 120 games against UM in Tallahassee that the Seminoles were shutout.

"Camardese was just outstanding," FSU coach Mike Martin said, "he spotted his fastballs to both sides of the plate. That's as good a job of pitching as I've seen this year, especially under the conditions he was faced with."

Seminole starter Hunter Jones faced six batters before getting pulled in he second inning. This marks the third game in a row where Jones has struggled badly. After being moving from the Friday starter to Saturday last week, and then to Sunday against Miami, Jones' next destination will apparently be to the bullpen.

"I'm about as disappointed as I've been with any starter who started the season as the No. 1 starter since I've been here." Martin said of the sophomore right-hander, "He's not pitching with any fire in his eyes."

Replacing Jones in the rotation next weekend will be senior Rhett James (3-1) who came in to pitch 6.1 innings against the Hurricanes on Sunday but did take the loss. James allowed four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out three batters. Tyler Chambliss and Brian Schultz combined to keep the Canes off the board for the final two frames.

Miami picked up their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when designated hitter Richard Gianotti singled to right, moved to second on a hit by shortstop Roger Tomas, to third on an error by Eddy Martinez-Esteve in right, and scored on a sacrifice fly by centerfielder Paco Figueroa. leftfielder Jon Jay then doubled in Tomas to make 2-0 in favor of UM.

The only other scoring in the game came in the top of the eighth inning. Second baseman Adam Ricks left off with a walk and was sacrificed over to second before third baseman Gabby Sanchez drew another walk to put two runners on with one out. Gianotti then singled in Ricks, and Figueroa singled in Sanchez to put the Canes ahead by the final score of 4-0.

Florida State fell to 25-11 on the season while Hurricanes improved to 26-7. After a week off, FSU continues the series with Miami next week in south Florida. Game times are 7:00 on Friday, 7:00 on Saturday, and 1:00 on Sunday. All three games are scheduled to be broadcast live on Sunshine.
