Seminoles crush Tech to win the ACC crown
by Drew Hankin

Nobody thought it could be done. Almost no one believed that the Seminoles could actually battle out of the loser's bracket to beat a supposedly fresh Georgia Tech team who had already beaten them four times this season. Barely anyone figured it would even be a close game. Well, they were right on that last one - it wasn't close. Florida State trounced the Yellow Jacket 17-5 to bring home their second ACC championship in three seasons, and fourth overall since the Noles joined the league in 1992.

Three days after throwing 73 pitches in five innings in a win over the Duke Blue Devils, Mark Sauls came back and mostly held the Jackets in check, allowing runs in only a couple innings - two unearned in the first and three in sixth. Sauls threw six innings total, allowing only three earned runs on seven hits to win his sixth game of the season. Matt DiBlasi turned in another good relief performance and picked up his first save of the season with three strong innings.

Due to Dennis Anderson's collision with an umpire during Saturday night's game, the Seminole infield was shaken up a bit as Anderson was held out for "precautionary reasons". Ryne Malone moved from first to third, while Danny Wardell got the start at first base.

After the Noles went down in order in the top of the first inning, Georgia Tech got on the board in the bottom half thanks to error on Wardell, and another one by Sauls on a pickoff attempt that went wild.

Florida State came right back in the next inning and rallied for four runs to take the lead. Aaron Cheesman got his first of four hits in the game with a lead-off single through the left side, and went to second a Gibbs Chapman basehit to left. Tournament MVP Shane Robinson then singled in Cheesman and took second on an error before Wardell made it safely to first on an infield single that scored Chapman. Bryan Zech then brought home Robinson with a basehit through the left side, and Stephen Drew singled in Wardell to make it a 4-2 Seminole lead.

Florida State extended their lead in the top of the third when Ryne Malone and Matt Sauls both walked before a fly ball by Chapman but runners on the corners with one out. Malone scored on a ground out by Robinson before Wardell tripled in Sauls to make it 6-2. Zech then reached safely on an error by the Tech first baseman that also allowed Wardell to score from third.

After a scoreless fourth, the Noles picked up a couple more runs in the fifth inning when Matt Sauls scored on a sacrifice fly by Robinson, and Chapman scored on an error by the Yellow Jacket shortstop.

FSU went back to work in the top of the sixth inning when Eddy Martinez-Esteve led off with a homerun to left field. Cheesman then singled up the middle, went to second on a hit by Malone, and scored on a single to left by Matt Sauls to that gave the Noles an 11-2 cushion.

Georgia Tech cut the lead to 11-5 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI-single by catcher Mike Nickeas, and a two-RBI triple by first baseman Whit Robbins.

The Seminoles put all thoughts of a Tech comeback out of their minds by answering back with two runs in the next inning. Martinez-Esteve singled up the middle and scored on a Cheesman double, before a double by Malone scored him and put the Nole on top 13-5.

Florida State's offense kept the pressure on the beleaguered Yellow Jacket pitching staff with another run in the eighth when Wardell led off with a single, went to second when Drew was hit by a pitch, third on a walk to Martinez-Esteve, and finally scored when Cheesman was hit by a pitch.

Smelling victory and knowing that they had been awarded an NCAA regional host side an hour earlier, the Noles capped off the championship game with three more runs in the top of the ninth. A Zech single up the middle score Chapman from third for the first run, a ground out by Drew scored Wardell for the second, and Zech eventually scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the ballgame.

The Seminoles improved to 42-20 on the season while Tech fell to 41-19. Both teams return home this week and will prepare to host their respective regionals next weekend.

The Seminole Ticket Office will be closed Monday, May 31st in observance of Memorial Day; however, tickets for the event will be available online on Sunday and Monday at seminoles.com
