The attendance problem (as Cal calls it) is simple, and I'm suprised nobody has really touched on this yet. How many big-time programs are located in major cities that are not considered college towns? The only one I can think of is Villanova, and they have a small, on-campus arena where they play most of their games. Going to a Tigers game is not like it is at Kentucky or North Carolina which Cal likes to bring up where most students and some fans can practically walk to the arena. For Memphis people, it's an outing to see Memphis play. Most fans live out East, and it's a 20 mile ride into town, then they have to pay for parking and gas and tickets....that is a lot. We will never sell out like UK or UNC or Louisville. It's cirumstances, not that our fans care any less. 13 k for La Tech is good in this city and Cal needs to shut his mouth and worry about actually winning a game in the Tournament instead of popping off about the fans not showing up. Go Tigers!
Uh, Louisville???
rriiiiggghhhhhtttt...
It's this small-time thinking that drives me nuts!!!!! 03-hissyfit

Excuses, Excuses!!! We don't deserve a national program....
That is all garbage.

Memphis is a relatively easy town to get around in. I've been going to games in the Coliseum, Pyramid and FedExForum. If you want to go, you can go. If you don't, you don't.

Waaaaaaaa... I have to pay for parking (YOU DON'T, if you aren't afraid to walk a little bit)

Waaaaaaaaaaa... The arena isn't as close as the grocery

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaa... (the best one you gave) I have to pay for gas!?!?!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... (no, this is the best one!) I have to pay for tickets!!!!! lmfao

Quote:So you think we would draw better if we moved the University to Milan, TN??

My apologies in advance to Kpig and Derby, but you are a p***y
I live in Arlington, but drive time has no bearing on my decisions to make it to a game. If my wife doesn't have a night class or isn't working, we're there.
Smells like TigerJay.

hm....
What happened to TargetBlue32?
Louisville isn't really a close comparison. Access and parking are completely different for Freedom Hall than for the Forum.

Freedom Hall has it's own exit off the Interstate complete with access roads and permanent booths for the parking attendants. Parking surrounds Freedom Hall just like the old MSC.

The FedEx Forum has a myriad of city streets for access and a hodgepodge of parking lots and garages scattered at various distances from the venue. Unless you have a preferred parking, you will walk much further to a game at the Forum. In addition, you probably aren't going to walk to the Forum alone. That means you aren't going to drive by the Forum, drop off your party, go park and meet at the seats. That would be standard practice elsewhere. There are no shuttles to gate. If you can't handle a half-mile walk in the weather, then you probably can't attend a Tiger game.

On the other hand, Freedom Hall has almost nothing to offer in terms of clubs, restaurants, and shops. We have one of the finest entertainment districts in the south, but you can't easily hide from it. If you don't want to expose your children to Beale Street, then you aren't going to take them to many Tiger games.

Where the heck are you parking that it is a half mile walk? The Peabody garages are only two blocks away....

What a bunch of crock!!!!

Another idiotic post!

Do you know how far away a half mile is from the FedExForum??? The Pyramid is barely over a mile away. I would guess a half mile is past the Exchange building.
All Cal is wanting is for all of us to show up game after game. Is that to much to ask? He is trying to build a national program and we want an awesome top program. And all some are doing is making excuses on why they and others do not go to the game. 03-hissyfit
I park about 3 blocks from the FEF and pay 5.00. I did last year and am doing it this year. I also live in Cordova. I only missed one game last year and that was the ICE GAME. Do I wish we played on germantown parkway--NO, do I wish we played in my back yard----NOT really. I have no problem with downtown and the FEF. There will not be an on-campus facility any time soon-get off the subject and move on.
I guess if some of you do not go to Gonzaga-will be its on a tuesday, its a 6pm game, its dark, its on espn 2, there is clouds in the sky, its to cold, its december, gas is to high, we play in the FEF---------------geez!!!!!!
We are currently the #4 team in the country for those who do not have a clue. Maybe for Christmas, Santa will bring you a clue!!!

I wouldn't consider Beale Street such a horrible place to take kids. It isn't like Bourbon Street with female impersonators and strip clubs up and down the street. For about 90% of the Tiger games I've been to, Beale Street has been dead. The only times I've seen it with a decent amount of drunk people on it during Tiger games was last year on the Dec. 30 game with ETSU when all the Boise St./Louisville fans were there for the Liberty Bowl and for the Louisville game last year. Other than that I wouldn't be afraid to take kids around Beale St. I can remember when I was in grade school (at a Catholic school) and we took a field trip to Beale St.

My kids are in private school, cannot go to PG movies, are not allowed to go to anyone's house I dont know at all, are in bed by 8:15 (except when they go to Tiger games) --I guess you might say that they are sheltered ---

It never occured to me to not have them EXPOSED to Beale Street ---I would not take them down it at 11pm on a weeknight but for Tiger Games Beale look pretty innoxious to me.
