bad news: phil ford to detroit with larry brown. it's bigger blow to our program than many will realize.

I don't know, hoops, as I stated on another forum, although I love Phil and what he has done for UNC, maybe it's in his best interest to go elsewhere for a few years, expand his background, add to his credentials, prove that he has his problems under control in a less sheltered environment, and develop his own identity a little more.
There was too much speculation about why he was not on the UNC staff and if he'd been put on it, people would speculate as to whether Coach Williams was cajoled into it. After all, Kansas survived without Phil Ford and UNC can too, if necessary. People from other schools always bring up his past and view him as though he was a failure that had to come back to UNC where he could be looked after and live in the shadow of his glory days. We know that not the case, but it's sometimes the perception.
May a little change will do him good in the long run. I wish him nothing but the best. After all, Coach Smith may have orchestrated this as being the best for all concerned. I'm sure he was at least consulted by both parties.
