Florida State too much for St Joe's
by Drew Hankin

The Florida State baseball team manhandled the Hawk's of Saint Joseph's 12-1 in Friday's series opener at Dick Howser Stadium.  The Noles pounded out 12 runs on 11 hits, with center fielder Shane Robinson's five RBIs leading the way.  Every available position player got into the game.

FSU used six pitchers in the blowout, with Hunter Jones (2-0) getting the win with four innings of shutout ball.  Glen Simon saw his first action in two years after sitting out all of last season with an injury, and Trent Jarvis took the mound for the first time after being redshirted in 2004.  Kevin Lynch, Matt DiBlasi, and Tyler Chambliss also got work in on the mound.

The Seminoles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when left fielder Gibbs Chapman launched a ball over the screen in right, his first homerun of the season.

Third baseman Bryan Henry got things started in the second inning with a double to left, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Ryne Jernigan, and scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0.  After right fielder Ruairi O'Connor drew a walk and stole second,  Tony Thomas walked before Robinson picked up his first two RBIs with a double to left-center.  Robinson then stole third, and scored on an infield single by catcher Aaron Cheesman to put the Noles ahead 5-0.

Designated hitter Brant Peacher led off the bottom of the next inning for FSU with a double to left-center before Jernigan walked and O'Connor reached on an error that also allowed Peacher to score.  Robinson then got his third RBI of the game with a single to center that scored Jernigan and made it 7-0.

After the first of just two scoreless innings in the game, FSU picked up a couple more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Robinson got his fourth and fifth RBIs of the game with a basehit to center that scored Jernigan and O'Connor.  The Seminoles could have scored again in the inning when Cheesman apparently hit a sacrifice fly to score second baseman Tony Thomas from third, but the Hawks appealed and the umpire rules Thomas had left third base early.

The Noles picked up another run in the sixth when third baseman Charles Cleveland walked and scored on a double to right by O'Connor that gave Florida State an 10-0 lead.

An inning later with the bench emptied, left fielder Danny Wardell, catcher Danny Diaz, and first baseman Dennis Guinn all walked to load the bases for the Seminoles.  Cleveland brought home Wardell and Diaz for FSU's final runs of the game with a double off the screen in right to make it 12-0 in favor of the Tribe.

The only run of the game for St Joseph's came in the top of the ninth off of a wild pitch by Tyler Chambliss.

FSU improved to 9-1 on the season while St Joe's fell to 0-4.  Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 pm with Michael Hyde (1-1, 2.87 ERA) on the mound for Florida State.
