Duke University head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced that Shelden Williams will return for his senior season in 2005-06. Williams, the 2005 NABC National Defensive Player of the Year, averaged 15.5 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.7 blocked shots per game while helping Duke to a 27-6 record and the ACC Championship last season.
"From the time I arrived in Durham it has been my goal to earn my degree. For that reason along with others, I am going to pass on the opportunity to enter the NBA Draft," said Williams. "I am looking forward to finishing off my academic career with a degree and also returning to the playing court to help Duke compete for the National Championship next season."
Williams closed last season with a school record 122 blocked shots, surpassing his total of 111 from 2003-04. He currently ranks second on Duke's career charts with 285 rejections and eighth all-time in the ACC with 2.77 blocks per game. Last season, Williams blocked at least one shot in 32 of Duke's 33 games and registered three or more blocked shots on 23 occasions. He also closed the year with a team-high 242 defensive rebounds and third on the team with 42 steals. The Forest Park, Okla., native earned second team All-America honors from Rivals.com and third team All-America accolades from AP last season. He was also the 2005 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and a first team All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament team selection.
