Florida State downs the Hatters
by Drew Hankin

In a bit of a see-saw battle, the Seminoles had a big lead, blew it, and then came back and surged ahead with a 9-5 win over the Stetson Hatters on Tuesday night at Dick Howser Stadium.  Brian Chambers (2-0) earned his second win with an inning of relief, and Tyler Chambliss picked up his fourteenth save of the season, and now leads the nation in that category.

The one through three spots in the batting order provided most of the offense, as center fielder Shane Robinson, third baseman Ryne Malone, and left fielder Gibbs Chapman combined for seven of FSU's thirteen hits and seven of their nine runs.  The trio also had four doubles in the game.

Hunter Jones got a hard luck no-decision, leaving the game after 5.2 innings with a 5-2 lead with two runners on and two outs.  Kevin Lynch wound up allowing both of those runners to score on a single before Matt DiBlasi got the final out of the inning with the Noles clinging to a one-run lead.

Things started out well for the Tribe in the first inning when Robinson led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball, and after Malone and Chapman drew walks, scored on a wild pitch.  Catcher Aaron Cheesman brought home Malone on a sacrifice fly to right, and Wardell did the same to score Chapman and gave FSU a 3-0 lead.

Florida State went back to work in the next inning when second baseman Tony Thomas Jr drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scored on a double by Malone.  After a pitching change, Chapman's first of two doubles in the game brought Malone home and made it 5-0.

After the Hatters closed to within one in the top of the sixth, they tied it up in the seventh with a homerun off of Chambers.  The Noles answered right back in the bottom of the inning when Malone walked and scored on Chapman's second double, and after a sacrifice bunt by Cheesman, right fielder Jack Rye  hit a sacrifice fly that plated Chapman and put the Seminoles ahead 7-5.

FSU picked more runs in the next inning, when shortstop Ryne Jernigan reached on an infield single, went to second on a Robinson base hit to center, and scored on a single by Malone.  Cheesman then singled home Robinson to give the Noles a 9-5 lead.

Florida State improved to 42-14 with the win, while the Hatters fell to 29-20.  The final game of the season series is scheduled for 7:00 on Wednesday night with Michael Hyde (6-2, 4.48) on the hill for the Seminoles.
