Florida State tames the Pack
by Drew Hankin

The Seminole baseball team won their twelfth game in a row, eighth straight in ACC play, and sixth straight over ranked opponents with an 8-2 win over the North Carolina State Wolfpack on Thursday night in Raleigh, NC. Bryan Henry (8-2) earned the win, as the Seminole offense pounded out four homeruns in the game. Center fielder Shane Robinson, left fielder Gibbs Chapman, first baseman Danny Wardell, and right fielder Jack Rye all went yard for the Noles.

Henry did not have his best stuff, but still got the win going 6.1 innings, giving up just one run on six hits while striking out and walk three batters. Kevin Lynch, Matt DiBlasi, and Brian Chambers each saw time in relief on the mound for FSU.

After a scoreless first inning, the Tribe took a 2-0 lead in the second on back-to-back homers by Wardell and Malone. Both batters now have eight round trippers on the season.

After four straight scoreless innings, the Wolfpack cut Florida State's lead in half with their only run off of Henry in the seventh frame when catcher Jake Muyco led off with a double, went to third on a throwing error by Henry, and scored on a single to right by shortstop Jonathan Diaz that made it 2-1. With two on with only one out, Lynch came into relieve Henry, and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Robinson led off the eight inning with a homerun to left, his second in his last two games. Third baseman Ryne Malone followed that up with a double to left-center, and moved third when Chapman reached on a fielder's choice, before scoring on an error by the NC State pitcher.  After a single by catcher Aaron Cheesman, Wardell knocked in hs second run of the game with a single down the left field line. Wardell was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.

After a three-up, three-down inning by DiBlasi, the Noles picked up three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. With two outs, Robinson walked and moved to second on a single by Malone before Chapman's team-leading tenth homerun made it 8-1 in favor of Florida State.

Chambers gave up a run in the bottom of the inning, but ended the game with a double play ball.

With the win, the Noles improved to 48-14 and 19-8 (3rd) in the ACC, while North Carolina State fell to 37-15 and 15-13 (6th) in the conference. Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:00 on Friday night with Mark Sauls (6-1, 3.23 ERA) on the mound for the Seminoles against freshman Andrew Brackman (3-0, 1.20 ERA) for the Pack.
