Seminole streak snapped
by FSU Sports Information

Last weekend it was a walk-off three-run homer that won a key ACC game for FSU. Saturday afternoon the shoe was on the other foot. In a game resumed from Friday night, FSU came back from a 3-1 deficit to take a 4-3 lead only to see No. 22 NC State walk-off with a win thanks to a two-out, three run homer in the bottom of the ninth. The loss was the first for FSU since April 29 and dropped the Seminoles to 48-15 and 19-10 in the ACC. It snapped FSU winning streak at 12 games and their ACC winning streak at eight games.

Matt DiBlasi (1-1) took the loss as his runner was the winning run but ace closer Tyler Chambliss was victimized by the long ball that won the game. It was the 10th home run of the season for Wolfpack first baseman Aaron Bates and it was just the second walk-off loss for FSU this season. The last one came in Hawai'i March 11.

Florida State broke on top in the first last night versus NC State sensation Andrew Brackman. Shane Robinson started things off with a walk and he moved to second on a passed ball. A Ryne Malone sac advanced him to third and then a ground out brought the All-American candidate home.

The Seminoles hurt themselves in the bottom of the inning with an error that allowed the tying run to come home. The Wolfpack started the inning with a lead-off double. After recording a fly ball out, the next batter sent a grounder to third. The runner on second took off to third. Instead of tagging the lead runner the throw to first sailed wide of the bag allowing the run to come home and the batter to get to second base. After recording the second out of the inning, the next NC State hitter launched a fly ball to right but Jack Rye slipped on the wet grass and the ball landed in for the two-out RBI double. Another hit, this one a single up the middle, extended the Pack lead to 3-1.

The game was the suspended overnight due to weather and resumed at 12:00 Saturday with new pitchers on the mound for both teams. In the top of the third, FSU tried to cut the NC State lead with a two out rally. Back-to-back singles with an error put runners on second and third and then Aaron Cheesman brought them home. The senior singled off Wolfpack pitcher Matt Payne scoring both runners and tying the game at 3-3.

The Wolfpack looked to answer right back in the bottom of the inning. A single and a bunt base hit put two runners on with nobody out. A pop up and a double play ended the NC State threat as Hunter Jones got out of the jam.

The Seminoles scored another two-out run in the fourth to take the lead. Brant Peacher drew a walk and then Tony Thomas, Jr. sent a two-out double to left field that sliced away from the defender. Peacher was sent all the way home and the throw beat him to the plate but the Wolfpack catcher couldn't hold on to the ball making the score 4-3.

Jones continued to stymie the Pack in the fifth. Despite giving up a lead off double, Jones worked his way out of trouble. He struck out the next two batters and then got a fly out to end the inning with the runner still standing on second base.

NC State tied the game in the seventh. A head's up play on a hit and run kept the Pack out of a double play and then a two-out RBI single off reliever Kevin Lynch tied the game at 4-4.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth. NC State used a lead-off single and a sac bunt to put a runner in scoring position. A single into left led to a play at the plate with the game on the line but a strike by Gibbs Chapman cut down the runner at home preserving the tie and giving FSU its second out of the inning. That brought Stopper of the Year candidate Chambliss into the game. The sophomore hit the first batter he saw on the top of the helmet before surrendering the winning hit.

Florida State will conclude its series at No. 22 NC State (37-14) Saturday at approximately 3:15 p.m. Next up for the Seminoles will be the ACC Tournament in Jacksonville, FL. Live video broadcasts will be available for all ACC Tournament games that are not televised along with Steve Melewski's live radio broadcast available on WFLA locally and on the Internet at seminoles.com.
