Full Version: The Inferiority complex of ETSU fans and culture

Years ago, some UT person told me that I had to feel subservient to him because, after all, I had only went to ETSU.

Now, you can imagine what I had to say to that rat bastard.

But after the ETSU-UT game it is clearly obvious that Bucs fans DO have an inferiority complex.

And there are reasons to have such a complex. The lack of attention. David Mullins. The fact we live in the worst sports area in the United States and our fan base wants us to move outdoors in Allergy Town USA. The fact we lost football and have to rely on the college President who killed it to get it back. The Atlantic Sun Conference. The fact we have fans like Rod Shaw and VolLover. The fact the Bucs are predominently known for losing. The fact our college president speaks as if english is his second language.

However, I never realized it was so bad until I heard people BRAGGING on a five-point loss to UT- a game the Bucs could have won- and proudly accepting the patronizing pats on the head from Vols fans.

That is an acceptance of subservience, plain and simple.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why.

Winners demand more.

Losers say "We played so well against the Great God UT! We're only five points subservient! We're only five points subservient!"

Maybe I can make ALMOST as much as the UT grad, too!

Disgraceful.
I have to agree as far too many people worship ut even though they claim to be Buc fans. I cheer for my alma matar, ETSU, and I do not accept being second rate to ut in basketball. We have shown in the past that our basketball is capable of competing with mid-level SEC teams(which ut is) and we should expect to beat teams like Auburn and Vandy and yes, ut. We clearly have talent that is on a par with these teams and we should be more competitive and should be more agressive in letting the powers that be know that we do not accept a second rate basketball program. Just my opinion.
Sorry, but UT has more talent than us. There is no doubt about that. I would say we are on par with Auburn, but not UT.
I'll buy that, 81.

But I might also buy that Belmont and Lipscolm have more talent than ETSU. You're not going to accept five point losses and pats on the head from them, are you?

Two years ago ETSU was off back-to-back NCAA berths while UT was in ruin and had fired their coach.

How did it change so quick?

And we are ACCEPTING PATS ON THE HEAD FROM UT FANS?

No way. No effin way.

A blown six-point lead in the second half is UNACCEPTABLE. I don't care who you are playing.
I remember we blew a 7 points lead in 48 seconds against Clemson in 2003.
And a question- did you walk away from that game proud of all the pats you got on the head from Tigers fans on their message boards or were you mad and demanded more?

I usually respond, "well if you COULDN'T go to ETSU, then I guess ut was as good a place as any for you."

Well, this is probably why you have a much more calm demeanor than I do, BucDoctor.
I remember it was the same person who blew that 7 point lead against Clemson that blew the 2nd half 6 point lead. Nuff said.

From what I remember there wasn't one Buc fan that was happy about that loss. Everyone was pissed because we had that game and also because Clemson sucked.
Pitt,

It's getting downright scary that you and I are starting to agree on just about everything.

Being happy with ANY loss is silly. Especially being happy about losing to UT. These posters drive me crazy with their "we just have to be happy with what we've got because we're not going to get any better" attitude.

ETSU used to be a great school. We used to have a great athletic program. The only sport we sucked in was football. I could live with that. People who were born in the 80s & 90s have no idea how important sports used to be on campus.

I remember events like having the No. 1 rifle team (nobody really cared, but we were glad we were number one), the NCAA program of the year in cross country, the Division I (this was before I-AA came around in the 80s) football player of the week in Sports Illustrated, a basketball team that would beat UT, NC State, GA Tech, South Carolina, Xavier, Wake Forest (remember the ESPN midnight madness game against Wake when we upset them?) and more. I remember taking No. 1 Kentucky to the wire, only to lose by 1 or 2 points (and dropping them to No. 2 in the polls) when we weren't supposed to have a decent team. I remember a top-10 baseball team. And these things weren't over a 30-year period. They were while I was in high school and college (other than the NC State, UT and Arizona wins - which were within 10 years of my years at ETSU).

I guess it's fine to be happy with a loss. I'm just not happy with it. We dropped so far, so fast. And people want to act like we should be satisfied with where we are.
Well, Kev, I do think you're overromanticizing the Bucs past a bit, but that goes with being a sports fan.

But the thing about ETSU today is that we ARE happy to just have a little niche. It's not about really doing it- it's about putting a positive spin on everything and "Winning the Right Way," which is actually "Doing it the way we want to, standards be damned."
