I was reading in a tricities magazine dated Dec. 20 that Steve Spurrier has been offered a job coaching football at Science Hill. Wouldn't it be great if he did then they could hire him at ETSU to be their coach. I would say that would be the revival of ETSU football. I doubt it would ever happen but you never know. They talked to Steve's brother Graham and he confirmed that Steve has been offered a job that he has never said he would not do it. Anyone else read this article?
The chances of that happening are the same as ETSU keeping the final score spread below 20 points at UT in a few days.
Jeff- Please.

I saw you as a nice guy who merely wanted his team to win and was trying to show some misguided loyalty.

But, no, I know the article you're speaking of and I'm legitimately wondering if you're more than 12 years old right now for believing it.

Regardless, it is a sad state of affairs when our local media resorts to Sidd Finch-type fiction like that article- and poorly done I might add.

Tricitiessports.com is an embarassment. A total and complete embarassment.

A bi-weekly that and internet site that predominantly does game stories. Okay.

The fact that they printed what they did- and not some sort of inside look at the coaching search- shows you just how bad they are.
Just brought it up for conversation. I was in Fatz restaurant today and just read the article. I did not say I believed it. Just brought it out to see if anyone else read it since it was just published. Honestly this is first time that I have ever seen the paper.
TriCitiesSports.com has no clue. No clue at all.
Ron Bliss is a boob.....plain and simple. I'd bet if not for his connections, he'd have no backing and he'd have been working at Wal-Mart after the Times News "demoted"....of course he benefits by covering HS stuff that the Times-News fails to go to......but I see very minimal ETSU coverage.

Can't believe they'd give that crap time in their magazine, or maybe i can...It was a satire by The State in Columbia and Bliss' rag runs with it like its fact....perfect TriCities media mentality....perfect..
If you saw that article for anything other than what it was, I hope you have fun being out of school for two weeks at Christmas.

That article came out after Steve was rumored heavily for the Miami and Alabama jobs. Here is his quote:

"I'm tired of talking about all that. Miami, Alabama, Tennessee," Spurrier said. "Let me tell you a good rumor. My high school job is open
I do.

I didn't see it in The Press.

However, I haven't seen much, if any, in depth analysis on the Science Hill coaching search. So little, in fact, that we have had to debate whether the interim head coach is a radio sportscaster or not.

So when this is what you run in regards to that- then what does that say about your skills?
I just know that they wanted to have someone in place for the second semester, but it is more likely that it will be around spring practice. However, that narrows your field because coaches can't just leave a job in the middle of the year. Therefore, I am thinking that they will go the local route.

Fritz has had nothing on this search and it goes back to the SH girls search two years ago when Mike Voitelin said Fritz cost him his top candidate by running a story on it too early. Not sure if the conversation that Doug ran was off the record or not, but Voitelin was pissed. Turner is playing it close to the vest, but I still don't think there are numerous candidates beating down the door. Maybe this is Jim Mora's new dream job.

I live out of area but was told by a relative it was in there.
Two things-

First of all, any A.D. who blames an early newspaper article on losing a coaching candidate is using the media as a scapegoat.

I've never bought that common excuse. HOW would an article saying "Candidate X is the front runner for the GIRLS COACHING JOB" possibly throw a monkey wrench into the hiring process?

And I don't like Fritz- but if Voitelin is giving him the cold shoulder treatment- then Voitelin is no better than David Mullins.

That said- Doug Fritz has been on the high school beat for HOW MANY YEARS?

Don't you think- since Science Hill sports are so much the Press' bread and butter- that Fritz should have some contacts with boosters- school board members- assistant coaches- or other coaches in the area that would make such a cold-shoulder treatment from the AD irrelevant?

THE BOTTOM LINE WITH THE SCIENCE HILL JOB IS-

George Pitts made that a basketball school. It should be one of the great high school jobs in Tennessee; biggest enrollment- Steve Spurrier and a heritage of other quality players from the program- etc.

But the reputation is that going there is akin to going to coach football at Kentucky.
Absolutely. It is a basketball school, as if there should ever be such a thing in high school. I truly think they will get someone from the area of NE Tenn. The timing and the $$$ will limit them to that. Fritz' article at the time said more than Campbell from Boone was a candidate. It had quotes from Voitelin and Campbell himself. Don't remember all the secifics but I witnessed a pretty heated argument between the two over it.

I do think Doug does a decent job however reporting the games and pushing his deal, high school sports, to the forefront.
If Voitelin gave him the quotes- then he has no recourse to whine over the piece.

If what you are saying is true- I have no respect for Voitelin.

And then perhaps we have the real reason why nobody wants the Science Hill job- you'd have to work for a guy who will point fingers instead of take responsibility.
Voitelin is no longer the AD at Science Hill. They received probation and a reprimand from the TSSAA last spring.
So Science Hill has more ethics than ETSU. Okay. I'll buy that.

So then the onus is back on Fritz.
Don't know the details, just what wasposted. I was just offering that as a reason that the info. flow may have slowed to Fritz.
It isn't- because Voitelin is no longer there.

And even if before he went Voitelin completely destroyed Fritz' name to the leftover staff- unlikely but possible- Fritz still has tons of potential sources to contact for names.
It was a joke, who cares, not a big deal.
It is a HUGE deal!

But then, I'm what's wrong with ETSU sports in your opinion, right?

So athletic executives throwing hissy fits to media members- which in turn is akin to throwing hissy fits to their fan base- is okay.

But, then again, who needs the media when you have a cousin on the King College baseball team, right?
Pitt would give his right arm to be Doug Fritz. And his left to have a job like him.
Uh oh, something tells me this post will eventually be moved to Buc Off. 05-mafia
