Rhoda goes down, so it would be time for Smith to step up and lead the team himself, Here is how he has done..

Why in the hell is he still playing over 38 minutes per game??
He is getting deeper in the slump, not coming out of it, last night was his worst performance yet.

BTW i think this finally settles it, there is no comparision between Smith and Jennings, they shouldn't been mentioned in the same breath.
I agree with Rod this time. Thats TERRIBLE, about the worst stat line I have ever seen. We have mailed it in guys...
I hope he snaps out of it soon or we will be one and done. At least get back to his normal level of heltor skeltor. That Libscomp game was just awful all the way around but Tim must have had 1000 turnovers.

We look awful. We miss Ben badly but it is more than just that. Is this the look of things to come next year without him ? Frankly we despite some just awful shots and turnovers, we will miss Tim badly next year too unless somebody steps up.

I hope this bunch closes out strong, but if not I am ready for them to move on. 03-hissyfit
This was only about the 3rd time I have seen them play. We look terrible. Smith included. I have never seen so many open looks at 3's. I really don't see them winning tomorrow either. We may "luck up" and win three straight at home to win the conf tourney, but if that were to happen do we really deserve to go to the NCAAs??? I want ETSU to be in the big dance as much as anyone, but they simply do not deserve to go IMO. You think last night was ugly, can you imagine a game against a No. 1 seed????
NO THIS TEAM DOES NOT DESERVE TO GO TO THE NCAAs!!!!

This team doesn't deserve its winning record.

I think we have seen the basketball team win its last game of the season.

But, on the bright side, the tennis team has made the lead story of http://www.etsubucs.com . . .

You do know that as new stories come and are added to the main page it bumps others down?
You know how to comprehend tounge-in-cheek writing?
Both schools on the boulevard did a great job bottling Smith up, forcing him to take bad shots. He's not been in sync in awhile now. This team has one game left.
It was quite evident in the Cincinnati game that Tim Smith put his own scoring above the welfare of the team. I sat, with a lot of other ETSU fans, and watched as he put up one errant shot after another during the final minutes of that game.

Sonny Smith said during the Jacksonville game (on CSS), "Most coaches wouldn't let Smith loose the way Bartow has." He wasn't criticizing Bartow. But the fact is, Smith has been allowed to run loose and destroy this team.

Our best move is to:

1) Get out of the ASun as soon as possible (now rated the next to worst conference in NCAA basketball)

2) Develop a better schedule for the team, forcing them to play better

3) Make a decision about Bartow. Either he coaches the team (instead of letting the team coach itself) or he goes.
I feel your pain Kevster, I was at ETSU from 1983 - 1988, so I got to see some really BAD basketball and some really good basketball. But until we can prove that we can consistantely win the A-Sun championship ( or at least be better than 5th!!!), we are going to be here for a while.
88- I don't think so.

You can move out of a conference without a good record. South Carolina wasn't winning Metro Conference titles before they moved to the SEC, for instance.

I can get ETSU out of the A-Sun. Conferences are generally looking at facilities, enrollment size, and athletic budget.

Duquesne- which has about the worst basketball program known to man- moved back into the A-10 after a year's hiatus in a smaller conference.

Davidson moved back into the So Con.

So the won-loss record is irrelevant. Heck, I could probably preach the 15-13.
Here's the pic:

The ASun is primarily a conference of small baptist colleges/universities. I visited the website of many of them and found they were about the size of Milligan college or a little larger. We're basically playing schools like Milligan and Carson Newman. It's a group of NAIA and Division II schools who got together a few years back to call themselves Division 1.

If you look at this week's Sagarin ratings (you can find them in USA Today), ETSU has the 333rd ranked strength of schedule out of 334 schools. Only Hampton (I'm not sure where Hampton is) has a lower schedule of stregnth.

A decent player won't come to ETSU. When they were in the Southern, at least they were in a legitimate Division 1 conference (although it was definitely mid-major). The OVC is the 20th ranked conference (out of 31). The southern is the 22nd ranked conference. You can guess where the ASun is found.
Well if one can sell it then I would love to go to a different conference. Although selling a 15-13 team out of the ASUN would seem tough to me. BUT I would not want to go back to the Southern, or go to the Big South, OVC, etc. I want in a conference like the A-10, or Big East, etc. (there is talk of splitting football and basketball only schools in both those confs). Hell, I'd rather be in the middle of the pack year in year out in a big legitimate conference. At least you would have good competiton, get talented players, national exposure. It would be cool having Temple/GW/Xavier or St Johns/Villanova on the dome floor for home and home series each year. Not Kennesaw St/N Fla or Davidson/Tn Tech/UNC-A year in and out. But one can still dream.
I really thought we'd go to Conference USA. It was a natural fit. If Marshall, Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee can move to legitimate conferences, why not ETSU?

Well, if we hang around the ASun much longer, we'll be another North Florida and the point will be irrelivant.
Kevster,

The reason the schools you mentioned were able to go to a legitimate conference is because their upper administration had a vision to do so. Our upper administration has no vision for the athletic department. I can see some of the president's vision for the school, i.e. the pharmacy school and improving the medical school, but he has very little vision for the future of athletics. I doubt he could name five conferences other than the "big" school conferences and the two conferences we have been a part of since he has been president. On top of that I doubt he could name all of the school from those two conferences either.
I hear you pain Bucs fans. I was shocked when I first heard that ETSU was coming into the A-Sun. FYI-just a couple of years ago the A-Sun was hanging around anywhere from 19 to 22 in the D1 conference rankings depending on whose rating sheet you beleived. They also would get a respectable NCAA seating at around 12, 13 or 14. However the last of all the good teams left for better conferences which was primarily due to football. I initially thought ETSU would have an absolute field day against the A-Sun competition at least in basketball. Bottom line is you haven't and unfortunately for you all I am afraid that your stay with the A-Sun will be for the forseeable future. I think your best bet is to get football back and the sooner the better. Get rid of the president and the AD, quick! Make the football commitment, upgrade your facilities a little bit, and you all are a lock for one of the better conferences. By the way Hampton University is a member of the MEAC and is located in Hampton, VA. Best of luck.
Conference USA visited the ETSU campus actually. They basically laughed at us because our facilites are terrible. We havent built any athletic facilities since 1977. We basically play nothing on campus. Definitely not what CUSA wants. I really think the only reason ETSU is building all these facilities now, is because they want to go to a bigger league. I am afriad its going to be too little too late.
I am having a tough time believing Conference USA visited ETSU.

88- Here's the deal. It really doesn't matter what your record is.

What a conference is looking for are are facilities, a good sized campus, fan support, name recognition, all of that.

And yes, I think ETSU could be that. Could be that very easily. But it's not going to happen because of the administration and also a fan base that would rather be a bedroom fan base for the Vols than develop their own team and identity.

You are right about the President- he's been through four athletic directors until he settled on the tennis coach. Nothing can be done until Stanton leaves or repents.

The facilities are doable. Remember, ten years ago the Houston Oilers were looking to train here so they can't all be old medicine balls and heat lamps.

Call me crazy, but I've always felt that Memorial Center could be a positive if you could fill it up- and I don't see why you can't theoretically. You put 12,000 fans in that place and you'd be able to be the Marquette, Gonzaga, etc. that you want ETSU to be.

But with the Vols and an overemphasis on high school basketball that ain't going to happen.

And I believe it or not, I don't enjoy bashing the A-Sun. It is what it is, and for a North Florida that is on it's way up from NAIA and you're from Florida and you're looking to grow it's a great fit.

The problem is for ETSU it's like being a 40-year-old man invited to a college frat party. One he had to drive a few hours for.
Just curious and asking anyone who might know....does ETSU (and the other member schools) have a "contract" with the A-Sun? How does that work? I mean are we contractually bound for a certain time period??? Just wondering.
You know what I find kind of sad for the Tri-Cities area is that the local merchants don't carry any ETSU stuff. I was in JC recently and I wanted to get a ETSU sweat shirt for my wife who attended back in the late 70's and had to settle on the bookstore. I went to the Mall and none of the sporting good stores carried anything other than UT, VA Tech, Duke and UNC items. Kingsport and Bristol were no better. Where is the love?
