I was watching the old tape of the espn game between #5 Arkansas and UM in 92. And what a game that was. The atmosphere was UNBELIEVABLE!! Watching that got me to thinking of the all-time greatest upsets in Tiger history in basketball. So here's my all-time greatest upsets.

1.1991-92-Memphis over #5 Arkansas. That was a special game because while all eyes were on Penny, Billy Smith had a career night as did Anthony Douglas. It was also dubb'd "a backyard brawl with an audience" by the late Jim Valvano. Final score Memphis 92, Ark 88 04-rock

2.1996-97-Memphis over#5 Michigan in Hawaii. That was the year Michigan opened 7-0 and the Tigers dominated the Wolverines and to the upset. I cna't recall the final score. But I do believe it was by 11. I think it was Memphis 75, Michigan 64

3.1990-91-Memphis over Louisville. The Cards were heavily favored at the MSC led by never nervous Pervis Ellison. But Ernest Smith has other plans. He dunked and dunked on the cards all night on his way to a career high night. inal score Memphis 88, Louisville 68 04-rock

4.1992-93-Memphis over #3 Cincinnati. Penny had the flu, but was well enough to lead unranked Memphis to an upset over Nick the quick Van Exel and the heavily favored Bearcats. To make it even more exciting Spike Lee was sitting next to the Tigers bench. Final Score Memphis 68, Concinnati 66.

5.1991-92-NCAA's #6 seed Memphis over #3 seed Arkansas. The Hogs dominated the 1st half and led by 18 at the break. While most teams would have been ready to throw in the towel and get ready for the next season, the young Tigers made one hellava run in the 2nd half. Down by 20 ealry, Penny Hardaway, David Vaughn and senior anthony DOuglas would control the tempo and the game and pull out an overtime win. Final score 76, Arkansas 72?

6.2002-03 Memphis over #7 Illinois. John Calipari's Tigers gave an impressive performance at the Pyramid to uphand undefeated Illinois. It was Chris Massie's 1st game of the season and scored a double double. Final Score Memphis 75, Illinois 74.

Anyone else feel like adding some past major upsets in Tiger history?

I would have to say that the biggest upset ever on this board is when tigerjaynotredamefanforever rejoined the board as TigerBlue32 03-puke
NCAA against Drexel, or Drexler, as Cedric Henderson said.

But Seriously, how can you leave out Providence in the Final Four?

At Auburn '75.
MemphisTigerBlueJay4everaftermiaminotredamebostoncollegevirgianiatechandbyu is incapable of talking about football...unless he is saying things like this:

"I like Miami only in fb, could care less for them in bb. But I also like Notre dame(my favorite),Boston College,Virginia Tech, and BYU. Outside of those, Memphis is my next favorite. I am a die-hard Tiger hoops fan and have been my whole life.

"I want the Tigers to succeed in all sports, but they have never given me a reason to really follow them in fb. They haven't even been to a bowl game in my lifetime. Much less done anything to even be excited about. They have a crappy stadium that the city should have redid and made it more attractable. They have never had support from the city like they should.

Even though I see them getting respect in some mags, I still don't think they'll be any different this year than last. Only because it's the same ol' story with Tiger fb. It's like the boy that cried wolf. I still will watch their games when on tv. I just won't expect anything anymore from them. "
There is no such thing as an "upset" when talking about Tiger basketball. I am never surprised when or whoever the Tigers beat in basketball. Big wins, maybe. But never upsets.
Also, any victory over arkansas is never an upset. It is just plain expected.
It was by no means a upset but the margin of victory at Louisville this year was awesome and I still get chills when I think about it.
Just nothing was better than eating them alive at home. The Big East teams will soon know what I mean.
Go Tigers!
You left out the win at Louisville in 1988 when we opened the game with a 24-0 lead!

I think they were ranked #6 at the time

By the way, I believe I remember the final score of the 92 Arkansas game in the NCAA tourney being 82-80
Remember well.
We own several butt kickings up at the hall.
All of them were sweet but the last one that happened always seems extra sweet!

Well, one of my favorite upsets was I think two years ago. Cincy came here and we were down by two at the half, and we stomped all over them in the second half....we were expected to win, but I'm sure THEY were upset by it...and the of course going to Marquette's place last year and making it look like they didn't even have a team...and on national tv. Not a real upset either, but it sure was fun watchin their fans get pissy. And then there was any time in the last three years against Louisville since for whatever reason some of their fans and national media members don't think we can play with them...and every year we make those people look like fools
Keith Lee's Tigers vs. Tisdale's Sooners on National TV.
Great Win! Was it an upset? Don't know. It was 2 powerhouse teams going at it in the Mid-south coliseum.

As I was reading post.................my sentiments exactly.................we should not expect to win them all................but we should expect to win each one..................

 Very dumb topic here.
What about the win over Oklahoma when Marcus Moody went for forty something points. Who knew he would turn out to be just an average player. 05-nono

But seriously, can't people ever let anything go sometimes. Whoever this guy is, he asked a simple question, and some people want to start stuff....even if he was that other guy, who cares.

DITTO!!!!!
Detroit over Memphis or Drexel over Memphis. I can't really think of many games we won that we supposedly had no chance. Maybe the upset run to the GMC finals in 93/94.
Stupid question to bring up at this time.

I'm definitely not sticking up for TigerJay, but I do think it's pretty amusing how certain folks get all pissy whenever he posts. If his topics are dumb, then don't read them.. or better yet, just use the magical feature known as ignore.

Kind of reminds me of all those soccer moms and dads who have really crappy lives, so they vent all their anger and frustration at the refs during a pop warner game. Hey, whatever makes you sleep better at night
