The better half and I just got back from Muvico. We left Fantastic Four 30 minutes into the movie. There were all these kids that were either left by their parents, who were watching Hustle and Flow, or they were trying to sneak in themselves. There were groups of kids running in and out of the auditorium and it was absolutely the worst experience I've ever had at a movie theater.

Here's the e-mail I sent to both Peabody Place and Muvico. I doubt it'll do any good, but it was good venting.

My fiancée and I went to the Muvico at Peabody Place tonight and had an absolutely horrible experience. There were kids (I’m counting people probably 21 and younger) running around everywhere in Peabody Place, and we decided to skip the line and getting student priced tickets as we normally do, and get two tickets instead from the self help kiosks. We went to the 9:50 showing of Fantastic Four in Theater 12, and got there about 15 minutes before the show started. The theater was filthy. There was some slippery substance on the floor by my chair and used napkins on the chairs. Usually Muvico is very clean compared to other theaters in the area. By the time the previews started there was a theater full of kids talking and laughing and running in and out of the room. It settled down for a few minutes as the movie started, but then it got a whole lot worse. There were groups of kids running around, screaming and carrying on like they were in their living room at home. This was after 10pm. Where were the adults? I’m figuring that they were seeing Hustle and Flow, and the kids were sneaking into movie after movie. We left by 10:30pm and joined a line of people complaining to the management.

We’ve been to about a dozen movies on opening weekend at Muvico and there was always people checking for tickets, if not at the auditorium itself, then at the beginning of the hall. There was no one at either place tonight. A little control would have gone a long way. I would also suggest that minors not be allowed for later movies without a guardian. This was the second time kids have ruined a movie for us at this Muvico, and we rarely go to movies before 8pm.

We got passes to a future movie, but I have very little desire to go back to Muvico or Peabody Place at this point. This experience soured me on both places.

hey yak...that theatre is a **** hole. i had an experience there when it opened that was one of the most galling of my life. i will NEVER set foot in that stinkwater craphole of a theatre ever again.

sorry to hear about your night.
we usually have decent times there, and they have student prices if you have an ID. Even one that's a few years old. However I think we're gonna go to the Paradiso from here on out.

Yep, I avoid the Peabody Place like the plague. When it first opened, my girlfriend and I loved to hang out at Jillian's and then catch a movie at Muvico on the giant screen. But now, unfortunately, it's just ghetto.

The last time we were down there, a group of black teenagers harassed us as we were walking out the door into the parking garage. The incident scared my g/f so badly that she now refuses to drive anywhere near downtown Memphis anymore.

Well, I'd advise that she hang out with btiger then.....b/c there is nothing good at all downtown.
I truly hate to hear this about both Muvico and Peabody Place. It was all open only about 18 months or so before I was transferred, but I enjoyed going to both and did not really see any problems. For years I thought that downtown needed a theatre and some type of development like that ... a bummer to read that once the commitment is made, within five years it is in a plummeting situation.

I did go for the first time in three years two months ago and noticed that Fat Tuesday was gone without a replacement and so was a restaurant to the right of McGuinness. Also the Long John Silvers/A&W was gone too. Well, crossing my fingers that it can still make it OK.

One non-downtown theater that I always had bad movie experiences was the Malco Majestic in Hickory Hill ... whew, to be such a new & nice facility, the atmosphere & noise were dreadful!
 My wife and I went downtown Sat. night to celebrate a birthday with two other couples on Beale street.
We got there early about 7:30 pm and it was not bad but when we left to go to the parking garage to get our car it was terrible. I have never seen so many groups of ten to fifteen bad looking teenagers. We walked away from the elevator several times to keep from getting on with gang looking groups. My wife was petrified until we got to the car and then immediately locked doors and made sure all windows were rolled up. As we drove toward riverside to get onto the expressway it was unbelievable with the huge numbers of unruly looking people. I am a native Memphian but it sure is not the same city that I grew up in. I won't be going back downtown for entertainment again.

There's really nothing more to say. :(

Where were the Memphis City Police and hopefully private security folk? This whole place needs some serious "WHoopAss" laid on it. :chair:
I agree with the above posters about something needing to be done. We needed something from the mall Saturday night and did not feel like fighting the traffic to Wolfchase. Decided to run into Hickory Ridge and had a very unsafe feeling in the parking lot and inside. We will NEVER go there again on a Saturday night.
You guys need to stay around the Wolfchase Galleria, and have a mayo on white bread sandwich in your SUV B4 the flick.(the kids in Bartlett are sooooo well behaved, not like the
"unruly looking people" downtown.

That kind of thinking is what made the Mall of Memfrica great....Oh, that's right. Not realizing there was a problem and doing nothing ran the Mall of Memfrica into the ground.

We go downtown every time we come to town.

We were on Beale last Thursday night til about 11 and last Saturday night late.

Everyone's skin was not the same color as mine. Everyone's dress was not the same as mine. But, except for a beggar, I was not harrassed by anyone.

One of those "unruly gangs" were probably a group of our own Memphis Tigers out for a good time.

If there are problems in a theatre, complaints are warranted and needed and Muvico needs to beef up security. But this was opening night for HUSTLE & FLOW, so only a nut wouldn't have expected a raucous crowd at Peabody Place anyway.

as for being scared to walk down the street because there are young African Americans around. That is obviously your perogative, but is also a bit bigoted and small minded, as well. If these "coloreds" were all so dangerous, wouldn't we all be dead by now?

Oh, there's plenty of fun to be had downtown. Personally, I think she's just looking for an excuse to get out of Memphis and build her little cottage near Gatlinburg.

I told her when that happens, I'm sure gonna miss her.

Driving through Hickory Hill now shows me what to expect from the Wolfchase area in 10 years or so. Bartlett has battled on their side to keep it from being a pit but Germantown Rd in Memphis is hell in the making. I still remember when Hickory Ridge and the Mall of Memphis opened and my parents would drop us off at one of them on a Friday. We never got into a fight, hassled people or got into any trouble and were never hassled by others. I wouldn't drop off a teenager there now if my life depended on it. Of course my parents wouldn't drop us off at the Raleigh Springs mall when I was a kid. The reason wasn't hassles with area youths but with the wild kids that would drive 15 minutes down Singleton from the base looking for "fun", lol. Their brand of fun was kicking local butts and chasing down their teenage girls.
This is mildly distressing.

We went to numerous events during Febraury and March and enjoyed them all. Only once did I ever feel the need to be cautious, and that was also elevator-related in the parking garages.

Downtown, even with all of its investment and success, could find itself completely empty in a matter of weeks. It only takes two homicides to destroy an economic engine in this town. I still marvel when I drive by the former Mall of Memphis.

I sincerely hope you folks will get back in your cars and go back downtown. It's really quite simple. If all the regular folks quit going, the place will run down, businesses will close, and our downtown will return to the way it was in the 70's. It is our choice, and I for one am not giving in this time. I'm not going to badmouth downtown. I'm not going to quit going. I'm not posting fear-mongering messages on the Internet.

I would, however, have sent the same type of email to Muvico.

Well you just have to use caution. You don't park 4 blocks down and expect a quick trolley ride. The trolleys are often slow as xmas on a weekend night and you could end up having to walk those 4 blocks down Main. Not a fun experience. I know it only took one experience of my wife and I telling each other to, "Keep walking. Ignore him/them/her. Where is the f*cking trolley!" to realize you don't want to have to walk very far out of the Peabody Place/Beale St area. I've never had a problem as long as I stuck to areas where there was strength in numbers. Get into the dark areas of Main and I can't say the same.

I agree 100% !!
when high school aged kids of any race are harassing you, it's hard to feel safe. I never mentioned race in my post, we just had a movie ruined for us by multiple groups of punk kids and as we were leaving they were yelling things like "they're gonna call the cops on us!" and crap like that. Made me feel real safe. The only cops I saw was one at the top of the stairs when you enter and some outside the theater. They would have done a lot more good if they were patrolling the actual theater.

Yeah, Memphis was such a better city back in the bad old days.

You all are rediculous prejudice people. To think that just because someone's skin is darker then yours it automatically makes them dangerous and the term Memfrica is very offensive and unnecessary. So now I can truly say myself that now all white people are ignorant and think that they are superior, perfect, first class citizens who has never had anyone in their entire race to ever commit a crime.

This post is meant to offend you so that you can get a little taste of what how it feels to be catagorized in a negative manner just because of how you look. You guys should really go see the movie "Crash" and dont worry, it's in the dollar theater. No black people there!
