...continuing with the string of gross over reactions by officials wishing to avoid public criticism.

As for the last paragraph, it is, after all, Oregon.

There is a lot more to this story than comes out in this brief yahoo article. The CU kid's father is a professor at University of Denver and says he thinks this is all about the fact that his kid publishes an underground newsletter at CU very critical of the campus climate, faculty, etc. and his arrest is retaliation. I know parents are supposed to stand by their kids, but this guy sounds like an enabler.

Kids from that class at CU said the guy angered by all those things listed in the article said to the class, "Any of you that say that you haven't been so angry that you wanted to kill 32 people are lying."

I can see why kids were scared of him. This kind of rage seems to be a rather new phenomenon, something extremely rare 30 years ago and maybe even 10 years ago. Sounds to me like this kid is projecting his mental state onto others.
In the case of the kid with the ammo belt accessory, I think it's exactly the reaction he was hoping for...attract as much attention to himself and his lousy sense of propriety (combination timing and taste is what I'm going for here).

I totally agree, Karl. I bet this changes his mind about how much attention he wants to atract in the future.
