The announcement of the new coach is tomorrow @ 3!!! This should be a big thing because they are getting a lot prepared in terms of festivities.
Actually, there are going to be two pressers. The first one at 11 am CDT at Ditka's in Chicago and then at 3 pm CDT at NIU.

Some sources say it's Pete Gillen, others Riccardo Patton....

Check out the NIU board. It's quite confusing.

Maybe Gillen is Coach and Patton as Assitant. Hey wait, this is the MAC maybe we hired both!

dAVE, just wondering other than that Bobby Narang report from the Daily Chronicle have you heard of another source saying its Gillen?
It's Patton. As someone, whom I won't identify, just told me, "what an underwhelming choice."
Two hours ago in the Chi. Tribune:
Quote:Ricardo Patton will be named the next coach of Northern Illinois at a news conference Monday morning, an NIU source told the Tribune. Patton replaces Rob Judson, who was fired March 10.

Patton finished an 11-year run with Colorado earlier this month. He announced before the season that it would be his last. He guided the Buffaloes to the NCAA tournament in 1997 and 2003. His best-known recruit at Colorado was Chauncey Billups.

A fairly successful former HC in the Big 12 with post season experience. Pretty good hire for the MAC.
Looks like a step up from what they had, but not a real blockbuster. NIU will bet better.
Still not the Pete Gillen we had hoped for but this guy should be able to build a better program with the facilities NIU now has.

I agree. It should be a step up.I looked at his recruiting areas.Doesn't seem to be tied to any specific area(s).
Let me get this straight. NIU just fired a coach who in the last six seasons had a 44.8% conference winning percentage and is replacing him with a coach whose conference winning percentage is 41.7%? In that time span, they have both finished last in their conference once, second to last once, and the highest they both finished is 4th. Below is how each finished in conference for the past few years (note that I had to combine divisions for the MAC). While some would argue the Big 12 > MAC, I don't think it makes that much difference when you compare schools within conferences since you are competing against similarly equipped schools. I am guessing Patton never finishes higher than 4th in the MAC.

Year -- (Patton|Judson)
06/07 -- 12th | 12th
05/06 -- 5th | 4th
04/05 -- 11th | 9th
03/04 -- 4th | 12th
02/03 -- 6th | 4th
01/02 -- 9th | 8th
NIU just blew it. Patton is not the guy to lead NIU to greatness. Trust me - I watched his teams ever since he arrived in Boulder. Great recruiter, lousy developer of talent and game day coach.

I hope you are wrong. This sounds a lot like Judson.

Based upon what I have read from other sources, I'm not sure this a great hire for NIU. I can't blame NIU fans if they are disappointed in this hiring.

I sure hope Greg Christopher can come up with a better coach than this for BG.
