Thats what I'm talking about! Get mom and pop to bring their little kiddies to a Kent State game, buy them some shirts, then in 7 years they enroll.
Way to go Laing!
This is great news. A few years late, but great news. I think you can market all you want but it also takes a "grass roots" effort as well to sell Kent State and the MAC to the local sports fan base. Word of mouth is the best advertising. Take someone with you to a KSU game. Then take them to another one. They will get it after a while. Maybe even make them pay for it once. They will be pleasently surprised how little they spent on a few hours entertainment. :secret:
I would agree that its a little late, but also right on time. here is why.

Football looks as if it is headed in the right direction and is turning into a product that people would want to buy. The bigger reason is basketball. now hopefully everyone we have now sticks around and as long as Spates and Woods come somewhat as advertised we could be looking at a four- five year run of potentially nationally recognized performance and continued dominance of our league.

Look at next years team. take into consideration what you have seen from the young guys this year and the progress they have made(even Parks) just this year and imagine what the team could look like even after Spates and woods are gone and Parks, Mckee, Sing and Sherman are seniors.

Guards: Mincy, Singletary, Sherman, Mckeee, Spates
Forwards:Q, Scott, Sullinger, Knight, Woods
Centers: Parks and Garcia.
hopefully I didnt forget anyone

I guess we will see what we get out of Parks, but I saw him do things on saturday that JE couldnt do even very well his junior year. If Garcia is as advertised, I believe we will have unmatchable depth at every position and even top 25 teams will be looking at us scratching their heads as to how we can play so many guys and not give up any talent.

so it seems the writing is on the wall. I think both JC and Laing realize we could have more talent than ever in the next couple of years, time to cash in on that and take the program to a new level, not sit back and make the same mistake of not capitalizing on the elite eight run.
There's a sense in which this "rebuilding" year is a blessing (I know by most standards folks would say we have simply reloaded and arer right back at the top of the conference, which could hardly be called rebuilding). With our team out of the national eye this year due to our mediocre OOC performance, we probably will not have to hear about JC moving on after this year and can be sure of our stability going into what should be another very exciting year for KSU hoops in 07-08.
That's good.
I only count 12 players. Look for another surprise recruit with talent. Oppenheimer is on the hunt. 04-bow

This could be Kent's vesrion of the "Fab Freshmen." If we can squeek out a MAC Championship this year, then go into next year looking extreamly promising, I can see another Eleit 8 run before 2010.

You forgot Antonio DiMaria, the 6'7" G/F that committed to Dusquene and then decommitted and is in prep school.

Also, Rodney Williams. I don't know if there are plans to bring him along with a scholly, but it is surprising that a non-scholarship player travels with the team. I know some schools have policies against that, but I don't know about Kent.
Thanks guys, I knew I didnt get everyone in their. GFlash, I agree it would be hard to see coach opp or JC pulling back the reigns on recruiting, I imagine they will keep trying to add talent as scholarships free up

about Rodney, he looks like he could be decent for us. I cant believe he would be a walk on from CA without being told he would have a great shot at earning a scholly. he seems to have decent athleticism and a pretty decent shot, he doesnt look completely lost on the court as well, granted he is only getting garbage time minutes, but he looks like he could play for us down the road.

What is the Rodney Williams story? I can imagine a kid from Rootstown trying to walk onto Kent, but all the way from California? Especially given the amount of lower D-1 basketball out there (Big West, West Coast, Big Sky), you think someone would have offered him a scholarship.
Hate to burst everyone's bubble but elite 8 runs don't grow on trees. Most major teams don't do it very often. Be happy with getting to the NCAA and maybe winning a game. Treat 2002 as a once in a lifetime experience because it probably was.

Still like to see this club at the mid-major elite level (maybe not Gonzaga, but closer to SIU or Creighton). I think they've been a notch below that the last 4 years, but I think it's possible to get there.

You really know how to burst a bubble with the prick of truth. No, I did not call you a prik. 03-weeping
