The game is a sellout. 04-bow 04-bow 04-bow
Should be a great one.
Go RRRockets!!!! 04-chairshot 04-chairshot 04-chairshot
(applauds) Impressive. Now smash the RedMoth.
THat's great. Savage is pretty big too right ~ 8,000?

Why the surge in attendance- is it as simple as 7-0
not based on butts in the seats. I just got back and would guess about 6000 and maybe some loose change in the seats for the mens game. It was a good loud crowd though---due in large part because of a number of show stopper plays by UT in the first half that got the crowd stoked. Excellent halftime trampoline show as well.

I think that might be two thing to explain the difference:

First of all this is only double header game of the season where one ticket works for both mens and womens games and for years I have observed that there essentailly 2 separate fan bases for UT mens and womens BB. with very little overlap. After the women's game most of those fans (80 percent or more) went home---probably 2000 or more went home----then all the men's fans begin to show up. Secondly it was near freezing with a bit of snow--not much but it may have discouraged several hundred potential fans.

Anyway---the men continue to win with defense. Miami was very successful in making that one extra pass to beat the double team down low and get an uncontested shot under the basket, but Toledo definitely has the speed and quickness on D.

Good see Chester Taylor again---Chester got standing ovation from most of the fans when the PA announced that he was the first MAC running back to ever get more that 1000 yards in the NFL in a single season. After the HOF indroductions it looked like he was signing a few autographs that people (students and kids mostly) stuck in his face. He stayed for the rest of the game---well he left about the time Charlie Coles call that last timeout with 0.03 seconds or so

so far so good, but it all comes down to a week in March in Cleveland
I thought maybe around 7K or so, but official attendance was almost 8400. Easily a few hundred seats in the upper level on the west side, not quite as many on the east side.

Chester was practically mugged everywhere he went tonight, including the Joe Grogan Room, which was PACKED. Two kids behind us were so excited to get Taylor's autograph, and the one shrieked to his dad "I TOUCHED HIS HAND!". He was very patient with the autograph seekers, and kept a big smile on his face throughout. Oh, and except for the bling, you'd never know the guy was worth a few million $
;-)
Actually, Chester is not the first. Rob Carpenter ( father of Bobby), a star running back on Miami's top 20 teams in the 70's , had a 1,000 yard rushing season, maybe two.
We were about 600-700 people shy of a sell-out. Communication really hurt. When word got around that it was a sell-out, people who didn't have tickets didn't go to the game since they thought it was sold-out, and they didn't want to pay for parking ($5). Also, I guess when people were coming in to park the parking attendants said it was a sell-out, so if they didn't have a ticket they thought they wouldn't have gotten in. 5,994 average attendance isn't too bad. ;-)

Carpenter had some good years, but I am not sure about 1000 yards rushing though. Check out these links:

He never had a 1,000 yard rushing season. He had two years of 700+ yards rushing and one season of over 1,000 yards rushing & receiving combined.

You must have some serious cheapasses up in Toledo if they can't pay 5 bucks for parking....

Heck, I had no problem paying 5 bucks for parking when I was a college student and that was years ago....

They didn't want to pay $5 for parking and then be told there were no tickets available.

Kind of like KC paying $5.00 to park at the airport just to realize, there are no passenger flights out. ;-)
Technically in the eyes of the Athletic Department it was a sell out. They sold out of all tickets, but several hundred seats were empty because people that bought tickets didn't show up.
The official attendance for the game was 8,392 and the seating capacity is over 9,000 - I think 9,600. UT sold all the tickets, but there were a couple hundred empty seats.
Carpenter's best year was in his 9th season.
1984 NYG:
16 games 250 ACC 795yds 3.2avg 7TDs

Chester's best year,so far is in his 5th season.
2006 MVikes:
15 games 303 ACC 1216yds 4.0avg 6TDs

I hope we pack it in as tight as we did for OSU/Toledo back in 1998. That was the ultimate atmosphere.

OSU is the 4th biggest crowd in Savage at 9228. Two of the 3 ahead are #1 and #3 Bowling Green 9668 and 9354 respectively, and #2 is Indiana on Opening Night with 9662. Bowling Green occupies 5 of the top 10 spots on the attendance records.
I made a mistake in not looking up the data before I posted. Memory failed me this time. Chester Taylor is the champ of MAC running backs!
