LAFAYETTE- A Kevin Preau triple in the bottom of the seventh broke a 1-1 tie to give the Cajuns a 3-1 lead en route to a 4-1 victory over Louisiana-Monroe Wednesday night at Moore Field.
The season-opening win was the seventh straight season-opening victory for the Cajuns.
Jered Salazar entered the game in the top of the seventh and pitched just one scoreless inning to earn the win.
Kraig Schambough pitched the ninth to seal the deal for Louisiana by giving up one hit, then getting Glenn Jackson to ground out into a game-ending double play.
Ryan Schwabe took the loss for the Indians, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits, while striking out six.
Kevin Ardoin got the start for the Cajuns going five strong innings, allowing one run while scattering four hits. Ardoin gave up singles to the first three batters he faced, and then settled down to escape the inning, allowing just one earned run.
Cajuns veteran Brad Saloom singled in the bottom of the fifth inning and advanced to second on a passed ball. Second baseman Justin Merendino singled into center to bring Saloom around, tying the contest for the Cajuns.
Preau got things going in the seventh after Phillip Hawke and Saloom drew walks off of Schwabe. Preau then drove in two with a triple to center field.
The Cajuns added an unearned run in the eighth after John Coker singled, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. Michah Cockrell plated Coker with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Cajuns leave Thursday morning for a three-game series at Texas State-San Marcos. First pitch is slated for 3pm on Friday and Saturday, with the Sunday finale beginning at 1pm.
