Passports
Quote:As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.

My wife and I went on a cruise to Bermuda two years ago and needed passports to enter the country. I spoke to one of the officers who was a Greek national and he told me he had to have his passport even though he never got off the ship in Bermuda.

We go to Canada all the time because my wife is a Canadian citizen. For the last couple of years I always carry my passport. My wife flashes her "green card" and then US Customs starts grilling me about prooving I'm a US citizen. I never have a problem with Canadian customs.
to USA Today's little article about passports.

I do remember that U.S. citizens can do Puerto Rico and V.I., but other then those two, KNOW the customs and passport rules.

I don't want to speak to the rules for Canada without being specfic - there are rules for car and plane and implementation dates.

There were several articles written on the subject, the last one of which stated that the implimentation of a law requiring a passport to re-enter the US would be delayed. I never bothered to get a passport because of this and I won't let the fact I don't have a passport keep me from going to this game. I believe the goverment web site linked above that says I don't need one though if I did have one I'd bring it with me.
