DAPHNE INFIELDER TO PLAY FOR JAGS NEXT SEASON

MOBILE, Ala.- Former Daphne High infielder Chris Davis has signed to play baseball at the University of South Alabama next season, Jag head coach Steve Kittrell has announced.

"Chris is an outstanding student-athlete and has a chance to be a very good college hitter," Kittrell said. "If he swings the bat, we feel like he will have a chance to play as a freshman. He has a pretty swing. He's the type of player who's about to blossom into his potential."

Davis, at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, played the last three seasons for former Jag Joe Hutchins at Daphne. Davis competed in just 14 games as a senior before sustaining a season-ending broken finger that required surgery.

"I'm looking forward to playing at South Alabama," Davis said. "I really like the program and the coaching staff."

Davis was hitting .380 before his injury. He was a starter during his junior year and saw action as a pinch-hitter in 2002 as the Trojans claimed a 6A state championship.

"Chris has a tremendous work ethic and a great desire for the game," Hutchins said. "Chris has great arm strength and is a left-handed hitter with gap power."

Davis has competed in the World Wood Bat Championships and has played the last two summers with the Bama Bombers. Davis also received a presidential scholarship to attend South Alabama.

The 2003-04 Jaguar baseball recruiting class also includes, 3B David Freese and OF E.J. Basta of Meramec (Mo.) Community College, OF Josh Morgan and 1B/C Aaron George of Meridian (Miss.) CC, OF Jeff Cunningham of Vincennes Lincoln (Ind.), C Joel Collins of Cardinal Catholic High in Ontario, Canada, 3B Kolby Kaston of Wallace-Dothan (Ala.) CC, 2B Josh Stapleton and LHP Eric Evans of UMS-Wright and RHP Austin Lee of Faith Academy.
