Seriously, what in God's name happened..ive been blaming it on the offensive line and Phil Horvath for 4 weeks, but im done with that. Is it possible that Jake Nordin is the best blocking tight end in the history of collegiate football? Ive never seen a collapse like this in my life..i still love GW and what hes done for the team throughout his career, but does anyone have any possible guesses for what happened? This seems to have been a hush hush topic on this board, like everyone is accepting that everyone goes into slumps..come on guys, not like this. It was only a month ago that I truly believed in my heart that the best player in the country played right here in Dekalb. I was even going to do my persuasive speech on it on coms class. Now he looks mediocre..there was a play where he caught a dump off pass today in the 2nd quarter and he needed 2 yards for the first, and he was sprinting towards the sideline for the sticks and then he like slowed down to an almost complete stop and got engulfed by 4 Toledo defenders. What happened to the GW we know and love?
The wheels came off the cart. That's what happened. This team is lost. Whenever you pull a QB and then put him nack in, you're lost. They don't know what to do. The talent is not as good as we thought. There was barely enough to beat the bad teams early in the season. When a few key players like Nordin and Hansbro went down and Free began playing hurt there wasn't enough talent any more. 1st & goal from the 2 and you can't score?

This season reminds me of the Bears in 1989 when they started out 4-0 and finished 6-10. The season just unraveled. I hate to say it but that was the beginning of the end for Ditka. They came back and had two 11-5 seasons after that but they were never the same.
I have no explanation for what happened to Wolfe. Its heartbreaking, dissapointing, and perplexing all at once. There was a time not too long ago when it seemed he could do no wrong. Now, he looks shockingly average.

In the end, I guess Turner was the better back after all.
Blame our O line for horrible run blocking. It is hard to gain yards when you are being tackled behind the line.

When you call an off-tackle run to the left side and the defense is stacked up on the left side, and YOU DON'T AUDIBLE OUT OF IT, I call that inept qurterbacking. 5 guys can't block 9, and you can blame the O-line all you want, that's not going to change at any level.
Also, look at how they use Wolfe-- review the irst and goal series for example. Everytime they are going to pass, they send Wolfe outside to either pick up a blitz or go into the flat where Phil waits for him to get covered before considering getting him the ball. The only time WOlfe is sent up the middle is when they give him the ball! Completely predictable - and of course- Toldedo nailed him behind the line. Terrible. Contrast that with some of the offensive play calling at Champaign right now - where they played the Number 1 Buckeyes to almost a tie with not a very good team. It's like they are playing a deifferent game as compared to the stale, unimaginative stuff we do.
It's obvious that Wolfe is hurt. He left the game in the 2nd quarter last night, but later returned. But he was basically a non-factor in the last quarter. He was healthy enought to play and was just there to keep the defense honest.

If he was that hurt why not play Cas Prime more. Running instead of just pass blocking as he did late in the first half.
I still say that we run the same plays we have been the last several years and it is obvious that these linemen cannot execute and miss asignments.
I will agree that you need to run the plays that go to the strengths of our linemen.
All you have to do is see how many people the defense have up on the line and realize the beating Garrett has taken game after game.Alot of that is our o-line but when they have 8-9 guys in the box you can only block so many!Plus we have no passing game at all neither qb was worth much last nite.We are not a good football team this year thats all.
So in my very humble opinion about Garrett I think he's just plain beat up and tired!

It is more than coinicidence that GW's fall began with the injury to Nordin...

+1 i thought the same thing last night. The interior of our line is young enough as it is. When you remove one more experienced blocker, it just gets brutal. Its not that Wolfe has struggled, its that the defensive line has been in the backfield as he gets the handoff

This is BS - Don't you think teams did that against other top RB's in College Football through the years!

The last 4 games have been TERRIBLE - even when he gets a hole he looks bad now.

+1
You saw that in the 1st half, the defense was stacked on the right side and Horvath looked like he was calling an audible, and they run right to where the defense was stacked. Flutie or James even showed the replay and made a joke about how you run to the bubble, where there is empty space. The play calling is unimaginative, the line isn't blocking, and wolfe isn't running with the same toughness as before. He is getting tackled by 1 guy. He used to break those tackles. And they're down 7, and they act like they can't run the ball anymore. Barry Sanders used to lose yards a couple plays in a row, and then he would break one for 25-30 yards. They would try different things until he would break one. I know you have to pass to open up a defense, but our play calling sucks. How about going over te middle instead of those frickin sideline passes that should be intercepted. Or the two fly patterns in 1 series when Nicholson was in there and the defense had a better chance to catch the ball. we're down 7!!!
The Daily Herald mentioned today that Wolfe was battling a hamstring problem. Don't know if he suffered the injury during last night's game or previously.

I beleive he is hurt as well. His long runi n on the first drive was the most telling, he should have beat that last defender EASILY. He had -2- options turn the after burners on and beat the DB to the corner or at least make a move inside make the DB turn his hips, he did neither and got stopped on the -8-.

There were a number of holes last nite that he did not seem like he wanted to go thru. Is he shying from contact?

I'm sure it happens all the time, but i'm sure other team adjust or throw the ball to relieve the pressure from the rush .Not that hard to figure out if you have the people to do it .So you don't think GW has taken a beating this year? This where his size hurts him.It may be BS to you but its not to me.But you seem kind of anti NIU all the time anyway.

What holes? There have been no holes for Wolfe to run.

Got to agree with you, there weren't any holes. You can't blame Wolfe when he is getting hit in the backfield by 3 defenders.

+1 wolfe has been getting nailed in the backfield as soon as he takes one step. he has no chance out there with the o-line we got now.

He wanted his respect, he got it. thats how you respect the best player in the nation, by putting 9 guys on him at all times. that doesn't explain the losses though. 5 or 6 guys can't block 9. even if it were a 7 on 9, there are going to be two holes that open up and then closed up by the last 2 guys. i think this is why GW isn't hitting the holes like he used to. he used to explode thought the holes, but now every time he sees a hole and takes it, he gets hit at the line. even on the only good play that he had, the 40 yarder, he skipped around to find his hole. the only people you can blame are the coaches. if you can't train your team to take advantage of the man to man coverage, then you shouldn't be a coach. if you can't desing new plays for GW, you shouldn't be the coach. if you can't play the right QB, you shouldn't be the coach. Did everyone else see how Dan actually moves around inthe pocket, as compared to horvath's way of just standing there and taking the sacks. dan did a fine job when he was out there, but his WR's didn't. there were so many dropped balls; balls that were thrown right to there hands. its sad to know that that is the price GW is paying to get noticed and respected. it's sad.
