I saw it first in NIUTrav's AIM profile, then I thought, he can't be the only person who saw that, so I went to ESPN.com and there it was, pictures of something on his hand. So what is your take everyone? ESPN.com has it all. Also read the Uni Watch, brings up some good points.
Definitely not "dirt" as Rogers was saying. It looked exactly line pinetar.

The guy's a cheater. How he stayed in the game is beyond me.

Yea, how can you have "dirt" in the exact same place two games in a row. It looks just like pinetar too.
I can't wait till the White Sox fans get in on this thread. I'm willing to bet that they forget about A.J Perzynski from last year.

are you kidding me. For the 100th time, the ball clearly did hit the ground and was trapped by josh paul. The law of physics do not allow a catcher's glove to be pointed downward and with the trajectory of the ball going down, you cannot make a clean catch with that glove angle. Plus if you watch the replay you can see a huge pile of dirt fall out of Paul's glove that was shoved in there by the ball. A clean play blown by the Angels.
In this case, Rogers just plain flat out cheated using pine tar on the ball, the two dont even equate, one instance a player is cheating and the other was just a bonehead play by a catcher who forgot the rules of baseball.
The interesting thing is that with the brown stuff on his hand he gave up one hit in one inning. After it was cleaned off, he went 7 innings, only giving up one hit and no runs.

And Bonds still could proabably hit 50 homeruns in his prime even off the sterioids. That is irrelevant rf, cheating is cheating and MLB really has embarassed itself by turning the other way.
It was definately pinetar but pitchers do it all the time.. Had the Cardinals great manager, la rusa, asked for him to be inspected he would have been ejected but he didnt and rodgers stayed in the game.
Anyone remember the Julian Tavaraz thing? Maybe thats why TLR wasn't gung ho about it.
As soon as you show me the MLB rule book cite that says it is illegal to have something on your hand then I will agree.

It is not there!

It only mentions that you cannot doctor a ball or spit on the ball or in your hand while on the mound.

Show me a doctored ball St. Louis and then we can talk ;-)

Rule 8.02
The pitcher shall not --
(b) Have on his person, or in his possession, any foreign substance. For such infraction of this section, the penalty shall be immediate ejection from the game. In addition, the pitcher shall be suspended automatically for 10 games.

Do you want me to show you the doctored hand?

Pitchers can't have stuff on their hands (or hats, gloves, etc). That's always been the rule. Dirt is allowed, spit is not. You arent even allowed to blow into your hand on the mound, however they do make exceptions to that rule on cold days, like last night.

As a Cardinals fan, I realize that he continued his dominance after his hand was washed. The fact is, he should have been ejected after the 1st inning. That could have completely changed the outcome after the game. Actually, he shouldnt have even started... he should have gotten suspended because apparently, he's been doing this for the entire playoffs.

There are conflicting stories but La Russa DID confront the umpire. One story I read on ESPN said the umps looked at his hand and thought it was dirt (this was in the 2nd inning.. after Tigers players saw what was happening on TV and told him to wash his hand). The supervisor of the umpires, who sits in the crowd, simply told the crew cheif to tell Rogers that whatever it was, wash it off. During the game, they did indeed show the crew chief walk over to teh stand and talk to the supervisor. If this really the case, then shame on the MLB bc they knew about it and didnt kick him out.

It's over now and I'm not using it as an excuse but Rogers should be suspended for the rest of the World Series.
cheater?
I thought he was an old timer country singer.

D'oh !

What the hell are you talking about, I know have disagreed with you on a lot of things, but this one is just amazing. Just about everyone who doesn't live on the southside of Chicago knows that the ball was caught.

Not sure why the ESPN articles would not cite 8.02(b) as they only quote (a) as follows:
Rule 8.02: The pitcher
The controversy surrounding the brown substance spotted on Kenny Rogers' pitching hand during the first inning Sunday night is addressed in Rule 8.02 of the Official Baseball Rules.

According to rule 8.02(a)(2), (4) and (5), the pitcher shall not:
(2) expectorate on the ball, either hand or his glove;
(4) apply a foreign substance of any kind to the ball; [or]
(5) deface the ball in any manner.

He did ask. But he didnt (and still hasnt) made a big deal out of it like he should have. He confronted the ump at the beginning of the 2nd inning but by then, Rogers had been told by members of the Tigers that they caught it on ESPN. So obviously, he washed it off. La Russa SHOULD have thrown a **** fit and got him ejected but he didnt. It's my guess that La Russa doesnt want controvery to surround this WS. He has stated over and over and over that he wants his players to "take in everything and enjoy every minute." Maybe that's why he doesnt want tomake it a big deal and is refusing to comment on it? It could also be because him and Jim Leyland are practically best friends and he doesnt want to show him up. I don't know... either way, the Cards are going to kick some serious ass in St. Louis. After all, cheaters never win, right? ;-)

You ask for him to be inspected the INSTANT you suspect foul play, not wait an inning so he can wash it off

lmfao You just don't like rules do you RWT? First, it was where your students sit for football games, now doctoring the baseball is fine. 05-stirthepot

Agreed but he didnt know until it was too late. He was informed by Cardinals players who were in the clubhouse and saw it on tv. He didnt want to just intrude on the game.. it would make him look like a ******* if he was wrong. So he went to the umpire in between innings.

I'll bet my life savings Kenny Rogers doesnt own up to it either. He'll stick to the dirt claim
