Theres a story in the Star about it.

I'm absolutely shocked our players allowed that to get to them. Thats something you have to be able to block out no matter what. Once it gets to you, there is a big problem.

By the same token, if it is true Miami allowed the student section behind our bench, the MAC needs to take action against them. Even Philips sounded pissed off in that article, and he seems like the type of guy who it would take a lot to get publicly ticked.
Also interesting to see them calling US classless on one of their boards:

Quote:man, NIU fans are the worst to come into Oxford since Marshall, easily. Just really classless, crude fans...

(obviously I am not saying all of their fans have no class. but this was the largest number of opposing a-hole fans I've seen since the '03 Marshall game)

Quote:Quote:
students could have made NIU's life a bit more miserable on sidelines, but they didn't show.

bull****. At the end of the game all the NIU players turned to the student section and taunted us because we gave them doodie from the sidelines for 60 minutes straight. One of the associate ADs at one point even took my friend aside and asked him to stop singling out players on their side.

yea, the niu players were really getting into it with some students there at the end

Spanks, where you near Miami student who had the freakin Garrett Wolfe for Heisman (or something like that) sign? After the touchdown he raised it up and I ran up 5 rows grabbed it, and ripped it into a million pieces. Then I said something about his mother... ya know, just for good measure.

I STILL can't believe a Miami student would be on our side rooting for Wolfe. That was pathetic. Though ripping the sign, and the ensuing reaction from those around us, was a definite highlight.

Pot, meet kettle.

have at it

If Miami hadn't moved the 200 students who showed up to that side, it would have been completely empty and made a nice backdrop for TV.

lmfao

Imagine the crowd if it hadn't been homecoming AND on national TV ;-)
How many "obnoxious" fans did we have there, anyway?
There's a rule in place, and it was largely put in place because of Miami's students - they had by far the most complaints to the league office a few years ago.

It is bush league, though they proved themselves to be idiots by chanting over-rated after Wolfe's long run and eventual TD. Nothing like proving yourself to be a moron. lmfao
I loved that they started the overrated cheer after Wolfe got slammed in the first few series 01-wingedeagle ... I was sitting on my couch and listening to it, I was glad when he started to run on them a few yards here, a few yards there, it was great.
Has anybody seen a response from Miami officials on this?

Nice of the Star to go out and report on both sides of the story.
I know Joe was mad in '02 when we went there and they were getting on Atkinson and Lee. Truly classless and ugly. It seems like Miami is the worst in the conference.
I know the rules about students sitting behind the visiting team bench but the Huskies cannot visibily let this get to them. After the game Novak should go to MAC officials and really let them have it, but this is not something that should be discussed or vented at a press conference. You open yourself for a whole lot more abuse in the future by doing this.

I really have to believe there was some incredibly offensive things going on for Novak to explode like this, has to be much more than Over-rated chants.
terrific win last night. I'd love to see GW win the heisman.

I will tell you that a SR DLman from Ohio State told his family after the game that the consensus of the SR's for the Buckeyes said that GW was the best RB that they faced over the past 4 years.

I was there last night (along with 18 others in the stands) and was even more impressed with GW than ever. Terrific player.

I hope you guys run the table and win the MACC.

However, Joe Novak complaining about the fans is a bit petty. As everyone saw there were very few students at the game...I mean very few. The students to their credit were loud and boisterous (the chant of overrated was weak and is ALWAYS stupid to chant) and should be commended for getting in the head of the NIU players (of course not enough to help Miami win).

This "rule" in the MAC is ridiculous. Hasn't the MAC heard that hometeams gain an advantage by playing at home? College students cheer and jeer and make noise...that is what they do. So long as its not a danger to the players/coaches on the field (or derragatory) quit whinning that the students were loud. Joe should know better.

Last season Miami complied and moved the away team to the bleachers with all the season ticket holders. Game after game, the visiting teams would turn around and insult the fans....it was classless. I'm glad the Miami AD changed things around to how they used to be.

By the way...there weren't a ton of NIU fans there but they were loud and were giving it out just as good as they were getting it. IMO, they weren't classless or rude or violent or too rowdy. They were having a good time and were enjoying a very entertaining football game.

I really hope Joe backs down on this and I hope NIU makes it more difficult for visiting teams when they come to DeKalb in the future. Afterall, that's what home field advantage is all about and its something that the MAC could use more of.

Best of luck the rest of the season!

It is very uncharactersitic of Novak to do this, Huskie fans are shocked by this. But at the same time, it is no excuse for Miami not to comply to rules. I have to believe some very very classless things were going on and were said for Novak to react like this, but Novak should take this to MAC officials and not a press conference.
I'm not sure Joe was upset about what was said as much as he was by Miami's blatant disregard for a conference rule.

Having the visiting bench in front of our student section was a definite advantage for us in 2002 and 2003, and I'm sure many of our opponents (particularly BG in 2002) were distracted by the "verbal abuse" they took. It's a part of the gameday experience that the MAC did not like, and all members agreed to change. It will be interesting to see the consequences of last night, although I'm sure any reprimand that Miami receives will be done behind the scenes.
the interesting issue here is how teams handle the rule.

last season Miami moved the team bench to the "alumni side" of the field. However, I attended games at Ohio, Eastern Michigan, BG and other places and I can tell you there was almost no compliance.

At EMU, the band is almost directly behind the visiting team. Band members are students and are just as loud and just as boisterous.

At BG, there is a group of students "placed" by Gregg Brandon directly behind the visiting bench. I was there for for the Ohio University game and took a picture of the situation and forwarded onto Miami's AD and others.

Ohio has students not directly behind the bench but very close.

There are other examples that I've noted since the inception of this rule. Miami complied with it 100% last season. After the lack of compliance by most of the MAC institutions and the lack of penalties or sanctions imposed Miami decided to change its policy to how it was before.

In violation of the MAC rule? Yes...100%. Miami did it for one year while other schools "masked" their changes. Miami beefed up secruity to ensure there would be no danger for flying objects (see batteries at Marshall) or dangerous situations. Last night NIU's players and coaches were 100% safe except for some ruffled feathers as a result of Miami students. Its a dumb rule and I hope it goes....however, I'm glad that Miami no longer follows it and I hope schools that complied 100% stop following it as well because I can tell you that the majority of schools in the MAC do NOT follow it.

The difference here is that Miami made objections last season and saw no results/sanctions from violating schools and this season Miami told the MAC office that it was changing its policy.

by the way...kent state coaches and fans had no problem with it.

Nick - first, thank you for passing along the kind words about Wolfe - he's amazing to watch each week.

With regards to the students, as you said - it is in blatant disregard to a MAC rule, and saying that others may be doing it doesn't make it OK. More to the point, NIU took significant action and has not tried to get around the rule since, so we do have the high ground on this issue and can and should complain about such blatant disregard. I wouldn't be surprised if Novak doesn't expect better from his alma mater, especially since we all know that the Miami students were a large reason for this rule existing.

The bottom line is that it is poor sportsmanship, especially considering that we didn't pull anything like this in DeKalb last year. As for getting in our guys' heads - I don't think so. We pulled out a tough win against a very hungry team, and I prefer to give your team some credit for making it a close game.
NickSkin -

I totally agree with you about the students being on the side of the visiting team. Many of us were upset when the MAC made the new rule. It does suck. However, we comply with the rule, as do most MAC schools. It's time for Miami to do the same. I totally understand the reason for it. Miami wanted the stadium to look a little better with fans on both sides. But, a rule was broken, and Joe was right to complain.

Woah. Novak must have been REALLY, REALLY upset to say something like that.

Joe seemed agitated the whole night. He chewed out and waved the finger in the face of a couple players (one being Greg Turner after his fumble, the other being Brad Benson after the long TD pass against Hansbro).

Joe had a right to be pissed. He watched the same game most of us here did.
The irony here is that it was homefield advantages at NIU which really led to this rule being implemented in the first place. Enough coaches whined about it to get it enforced.
