You're right, axeme, everybody picked Kent that year, because it was the logical pick, and it turned out to be right. Predictions are made because people are interested in them, but they aren't worth the paper they are written on. Progosticators make their picks based upon (1) the previous year's won-loss record, (2) what players from the previous season are gone, (3) who is back (including the coach), and (4) the past credentials of any new players. They can't take into account any of the so-called intangibles, and they certainly can't predict any unexpected injuries. There was a year in the late 1980's when OU was picked #1 and ended up dead last (before the MAC went to to divisions), because, while they had great individual talent, they were incapable of playing as a team. In 1998/99 Akron was the logical pick, but that team fell apart and finished way down in the standings. Jami Bosley was quoted as saying something to the effect that "basketball quit being fun." My point is that nobody really knows. That's why they play the games. I look at predictions, just like everybody else, but put no stock in them.
