#1 Heisman candidate?

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sto...llo/060828

I really like the Ted Ginn comment....
too bad it's tounge in cheek...The guy does deserve serious hype - if he stays healthy he will rock the NCAA and NFL. Is NIU marketing him???

Not really. As of now there's no official Heisman campaign. They might be waiting to see what happens at OSU, just guessing though.

My uderstanding is that both Wolfe and Coach Novak agreed that the emphasis must be placed on the team not and individual...Wolfe tends to shy away from the limelight. Some say that the coaches do not want to put undue pressure on Wolfe to perform especially agasint OSU.

If Wolfe has a big day at OSU look for NIU to start a Heisman campaign for Wolfe.

Gadzooks Batman! You gotta be kidding me- That is crazy!!!! The best player in the conference and your gonna sit on him??? At this level (D1A) it's all part of it- why the SI layout then?? I can't believe Gradkowski, Frye etc. had sites and Wolfe does'nt. A definate missed marketing op.

FYI, Michael Turner had his own website for his Heisman campaign in 2003. It didn't really do much. The website is still there, http://www.turnertheburner.com

Here at NIU, we tend to have a lot of missed marketing ops...... this is nothing surprising from "Marketing", even with the reasoning above being rather suspect in my opinion...
In other words, they don't want to embarass him if he rolls out a 17 carry for 50 yard day on Saturday. 05-stirthepot

This appears to be a football discussion, which means that Kent State opinions are not needed.

Question - have you yet seen ANY articles written about MAC football that haven't mentioned Garrett Wolfe? Neither have I.

There are few people that haven't heard of Garrett Wolfe. If he again has an impressive Labor Day Saturday on network TV, they'll know him even more.

I find it refreshing that we aren't simply hearing a ton of hype about a kid and he wants the focus to remain on the kid. This kid is as good as it gets on and off the field and I'd hate to see that detracted from at all by blowing smoke about him being the best player in the nation - he'll just prove how great he is on the field, not on the web or by US Mail.

Same reason Novak doesn't put player's names on the jerseys. The name on the front, is more important than the name on the back. Team first.

Do they have a football team? lmfao
Doesn't Northern Illinois have another big game to choke away? They are the best team in the MAC with as many conference championships as Kent State in the 2000s.

Another reason why Wolfe won't win the Heisman (beyond the fact that Ohio State and Iowa will equal out the 200-yard games he has against the ridiculous MAC defenses) is 20 games out of a possible 24 the last two years. If he can't be healthy, he is the best running back on the sidelines.

Ouch, someone seems very envious and jealous. Don't hate...appreciate! Afterall, teams like NIU and players like Garrett Wolfe are keeping this conference in the spotlight and garnering more respect. Wolfe was out one of those 4 games due to an injury that was non-football related. For as much as he does, he's probably the most durable back in this conference and in the nation. Adrian Peterson missed a lot of last year and everyone still considers him to be the best RB in the nation.
Envious of what? I was sitting in the stands, watching my school represent the MAC in the NCAA basketball tournament. Which bowl game did Northern Illinois go to?

Thanks for proving my point. Adrian Peterson was healthy and awesome in 2004, and he was earning Heisman attention. He was banged up much of 2005 and was an afterthought once his team dropped out of the top 10. Just like Wolfe, he and his team have great potential if he stays healthy.

What does it matter if it was football related? He has missed four games over the last two years, and NIU's record is 2-2 in those four. Two years ago, the loss cost NIU a spot in the MAC title game, and last year it may have cost NIU a bowl game. The point is if he doesn't carry the 30 times a game for 12 games in the regular season, it is no Heisman and probably no championship.
KStud Wrote:Doesn't Northern Illinois have another big game to choke away? They are the best team in the MAC with as many conference championships as Kent State in the 2000s.

The operative phrase in there is "big game", which implies that NIU is at least playing in such games. Kent, on the other hand, has been a complete non-factor.

Wolfe had 175 against Michigan and 250+ against NU, two Big Ten bowl teams. Granted, OSU and Iowa probably will be better defensively, but in '05 he produced well against good teams - Michigan saddled PSU with their only loss, and NU beat Iowa and Wisconsin.

Wolfe won't win the Heisman because nationally people expect absurd numbers from non-BCS conference players in order to consider them in the equation for the exact insulting argument you've made. The ironic part about that is that he's put up 3,200+ yards across 16 starts in 20 games played, so he has the stats that should be necessary to get him legitimately into a discussion.

Personally, I (and Garrett) don't really give a **** if he's in the Heisman discussion, outside of seeing some positive press. I (and Garrett) want him to be successful because that means the team likely will be, and everyone here just wants to see NIU win the MAC. And if we see Kent in the MACC, then you can finally chalk up one big game that Kent will have participated in during the last 2 decades.

You mean that one-and-done first round game you guys got blown out in? At least in our big games we are competitive and only lost by one point.

Really? What big games are those? By my count, you've NEVER even played a ranked opponent in the post-season in either fb or bb, at least in the last 10 years. We have four WINS vs. ranked opponents/"BCS"-type in the post-season. I guess it's easier to be a none-and-done, eh? I'd rather play, whatever the outcomes. We'll take our losses along with our wins. No shame in that.
