From the guy who said he wouldn't watch the winter olympics because it was too white.

How does this guy get a job and how does he keep them w/his lack of talent ?

How about a "Bryant Gumbel is an Idiot" thread?
Don't get me wrong, I think the guy is an a*hole for saying these things, but I think he is right on a certain level. First, the number of black athletes in the Winter Olympics is quite low because most of the sports offered have little black participation. Second, with how professional sports has turned into this money-making machine, it's conceivable to think that these employees use each other in order to get every dollar.

So, if these African American athletes don't participate because they aren't games that they play or are interested in then how is that the Olympic's fault? The NBA and NFL are dominated by African American athletes. I don't hear white people complaining that there are too many black people in the NBA and NFL and not enough white people.
The NFL's players' union has the least power of any of the major sports leagues, by far, despite the enormous disparity in financial strength between the NFL and the other leagues. It's hard to argue otherwise with a straight face.

As for the Olympics, Gumbel was specifically talking about the Winter Olympics, which does see very few blacks competing. And he's right about one part - you cannot talk about a gathering of the greatest athletes in the world that has barely a black face included. That and the Winter Olympics are basically a more accepted version of the X games, only with more crying.

How can you compare basketball and football financially? Yes people actually care about football, but football has a roster of 75 versus a basketball with 15 or so. Basketball plays 10x as many games. Obviously football draws bigger crowds.

Football will never pay like basketball. Just ask Maurice Clarett.

It's not just about the dollar value.

I'm not african american but I spend 10K a year on Heat tickets ( God bless Dwayne Wade). I never once said "hell theres not enough whites so I ain't buyiong them ". His statements are racist on every front.

If I had a chance to see the Winter Olympics I would do it just the same. As for those who don't think the winter olympics don't have great athletes you are dead wrong. Try skiing, try skating try the differant events held there. They are just as athletic as any runner out there.

Athletics are color blind in my world either way. Gumbel should have been let go along time ago but for some reason it hasn't happened. I plan on paying for the NFL network to watch a sport predominantly african american ( from the total populatin they carry) and it never occurred to me that is was. I don't care but I find it hard to support Gumbels racism.
Bryant Gumbel and Lee Corso are idiots. At least Bryant has a nice brother named Greg.
I don't know how Gumble expects to make a sport "black" unless you want to see a speed skater in a black ski mask holding a gun while being chased by police dogs after he robs a liquor store. Technical score for speed and artistic for how much cash he got away with. That would get better ratings. lmfao
Gumble has always had a chip on his shoulder that blacks are being discriminated against. I'll bet the reverened JJ is one his best friends.

Gumble just needs to grow up--but so do a lot of black people to tell you the truth. It's time for blacks to stop being babies and pampered and just take responsibility for their own actions and not blame whites or racism when things don't go the way they want them to go.

Gumble is the type of guy who wants to blame everything on racism instead of taking a good look in the mirror. I'm 49, and I've heard this crap for the past 40 years of my life, and I'm fed up with it.

I can't stand to listen to a game where Gumble is commentator knowing what the main principle is that drives all his thinking and talking.
If he gets fired, it will give him more time to focus on his hit show: Gumbel 2 Gumbel http://www.planet-familyguy.com/pfg/subt...sode&id=12
Perhaps he should change his name to Grumble 03-old

My opinion of his comments: He was mostly addressing the marketing of the games as the best athletes in the world competing and how because of that we should care. Personally, I don't care much about the Winter Olympics because there simply isn't enough biathalon shown - THOSE guys are athletes, while the skaters are friggin mimes.

PS - anything that utilizes a panel of judges to pick a winner is not a sport.

Personnally I hate figure skating and don't watch it. Thats not to say they are not tremendous athletes, just something I don't get into. But speed skating, skiing, hockey, etc... they are competitive sports that interest me that show the tremendous abilities of the athletes involved. These guys are some of the greatest athletes in the world.

Gumbel is saying that the sports in which african americans excel in are the only standards that can be used when identifying the athleticism of the person. If a non african american even thought about saying something like this they would be fixing their resume up for a new job which would be impossible to find. Under the current definition utilized universally the guy would be defined as a bigtime racist. He doesn't watch the winter olympics because they are "too white".

Long live John Saunders the Bronc w/brains and big supporter of bronco hockey.

See, I didn't see it that way.

Howard Cosell and Jimmy the Greek get fired for saying blacks are superior athletes but this guy still has a job. Whatever.

If the players don't like their situation they should strike or form their own league.

THe best Winter Olympic Athletes happen to be Caucasian as do nearly all the best Swimmers. Does the fact that few black participate in Winter Olympic or Swimming make those sports any less relevant? I don't believe so. When blacks become more representative in either of these 2 sports I won't stop watching them and he shouldn't base his viewing habits of a sport on whether or not their are black athletes participating in them.
Any Caucasian sportswriter or commentator who made such remarks would be vilfied in the media and possibly lose his job.

If Caucasians based their sports viewing habits upon the race of the participants than the NBA wouldn't exist and the NFL would be a mid level sport in terms of media and fan attention. People like Gumbel want others to get beyond race in their thought processes but obviously he hasn't himself. Gumbel is a hypocrite.

That and the Winter Olympics are basically a more accepted version of the X games, only with more crying.

I can't quite tell if this is you commenting or someone else, but I will respond to what I see in here for the first time.

Gene Upshaw is the NFLPA's representative. And the NFLPA has been bending over backwards recently, and such has the least benefits and protections amongst the dominant professional sports unions in the U.S.

As for blacks not being involved in swimming - Gumbel did not say that a sport is less legitimate if blacks did not compete, he said he doesn't agree with anyone claiming a "collection of the greatest athletes in the world" with barely a black face among them. On the surface, I entirely agree with him. If you want to extrapolate it to where you have, and believe that he has claimed that skiing isn't a sport because blacks aren't involved (which isn't what he said), then it is more of an issue. But in that case, you're putting words in his mouth.
