There is a brief mention that CMU has their second verbal from Wisconsin. What is up with NIU recruiting. Wisconsin used to be our second home. Now 3 mid level players have committed to our rivals. Is NIU shooting too high? Will we be left holding the bag or trying to get commitments to switch from other MAC schools to us?

Don't know anything about the players or if we were recruiting them BUT it does seem like we are taking a risky approach this year and battling the big boys for some players. It is a risk-reward approach, if we get them, we have a chance to be really good but if we don't, we could be hurting in a couple years.
Cheesland and Minnesoota are going to be more competitive for NIU this year and in the coming years. CMU is working those states harder as will be WMU (who has an indoor practice facility). If that wasn't enough MWC teams are increasingly looking East as well. Wyoming is working WI, MN , MO & IA and New Mexico has offered 3 Illinois players. NIU should be competitive with Wyoming as they are a smaller school ( their facilities shouldn't be any better than NIU's) and haven't been winning in the MWC (which is a significantly better conference than the MAC) but New Mexico is another story. THey've improved on the gridiron, draw about 40K per game and I'm sure have an indoor practice facility and BCS like facilities, they are going to be a challenge. (Keith Otis, Brian Thomas & Jordain BRown.

LB"s Blake Sorenson-MN & Shawn Girard-IA have been offered by Wyoming as well as OL's Scott Wedige and Jacob Olsen of WI. QB Caleb Walter-IA

if we're gonna be settling for weds/thurs/fri/sun games, might as well risk battling for the best recruits

Wyoming has always gone into MN and I bet $$ that Cowboy facilites are much better than ours.... I know there is not much noise on the websites about early offers and committments, but Joe seems to get it done in the end. If an out of state player is committing to CMU this early they are probadly afraid they are not going to see other options and we don't want to be fighting for those players anyway
Weren't we the only one to offer Doug Free? Just because no one else offered does not mean they won't be great players. Zach Holycross was a walk on who started as a true freshman. I just wonder if we are not working as hard recruiting hoping we get some of the bigger names rather than researching lesser players who can play.
OL Aurthor Ray committed to BC recently. He said it came down to BC or Iowa State. Looks like NIU didn't matter to him.

Luckily for NIU, Wyoming hasn't won in the MWC in years; the LB that CMU signed from WI was the highest rated player at his position in WI so I wouldn't say he couldn't have gotten offers elsewhere. They were likely on him early and often. NIU has recruited lots of difference makers from WI & MN; we can't be losing talent frmo those 2 states to other MAC teams especially those in our division.

BC is a heck of a program in a topflight conference (ACC), he will get an excellent education there also. BC is also only one of 2 Catholic Universities that play D1A football. BC doesn't recruit much in ILlinois fortunately, wish I could say the same for ND 03-hissyfit
