Is the area around Northwestern's campus good/bad? I've never been there.

I'm going to be looking for a place to live in northern Chicago, I believe. Does anyone have suggestions?

Just doing an initial search, I found an apartment near Main Street and Chicago Avenue in Evanston. Is that the ghetto? I see train tracks but it is close to the lake.

Here is a map.

Thanks.
It is very upperclass. A lot of great places to eat. Bad parking arrangements for football. Davis Street Fishmarket is awesome.
yeah you should have no problem living near Northwestern's campus, its a really nice area, and yes GREAT FOOD!
It is a very nice place to live, but expensive. If you do end up moving to the area, be sure to hit up Buffalo Joe's in Evanston for wings. Their hot sauce is not too hot, but they top off their suicide wings with jalapenos for the perfect combination of heat and flavor. Best wings I have ever had, hands down.

Assuming it is still there, Pine Yard has great oriental food as well.
i personally love my home (just moved in there nearly 2 years now) in wilmette. its neighboring to the place you mention above. however i found that evanston isnt as nice as wilmette or winnetka. the place is very near to Grey Park and i personally have been there once and didnt like the atmosphere. dont know how to describe it, but its a bit scary. just a bit. try to find a nicer area. how about wilmette??
if you can afford the north shore, by all means go for it. its truly a world unto itself and a great place to live. id assume you wouldnt be looking in that area if it wasnt an option. but just know it will hit your pocketbook. hard. just sayin. im not quite clear. are you leaning more towards evanston/north suburbs, or are north parts of chicago an option too? what about other parts of chicago?

heres a little wikipedia on the north shore. the cities are listed at the bottom
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Shore_%28Chicago%29

i used to know a real good website that dealt with relocating to chicago. ill try and find it for you.
The immediate area and many blocks extended from NU campus in most directions is VERY nice.

Be aware Evanston does have a few undesireable neighborhoods unlike most all other north shore burbs.

The far northern edge of the Chicago city limits to the south of NU straddles Evanston limits but is also many blocks away. That area away from Lake Michigan shoreline was also once prime and desireable Chicago real estate years ago but has deteriorated in last decade.
If you're looking at Evanston for a college like atmosphere, and want to live in the city, check Lincolnwood area near Loyola.

Oh Lord, there go the property values!
Thanks everyone for your help. Hopefully I will find out today whether I am going to Chicago or not but I believe it will be in the northern part if I do. So, I don't believe that I'll be tied to one area. Thanks also for the suggestions of other cities too. I'll check them out. I may come back to you guys for more help.

Thanks.

Are you going to be teaching at NU?

Oh, no. Much less glamorous. I just graduated with an MBA so I interviewed with a Chicago based company a couple times and they are sending me through their leadership track program which involves management before moving to the corporate office. Definitely some good and bad in it but my credentials are no where near what would be required to teach at NU.

I was just thinking that it sounds like I'll be working in the northern part of the city, so Evanston was a logical choice but I'm open to all suggestions. I'll let you guys know if I need more help.

Don't you have to be a former terrorist to get a teaching job at Northwestern?

Well, the realtor site may help him find the nice neighborhoods but he clearly said he is looking for an apartment not a house.
evanston is real nice. make sure to visit pete miller's steakhouse there. jazz + steaks = 02-13-banana

And you can bring all your wine and brie with you from Oxford. ;-)

wine+brie=ravinia. another north shore institution. which is not to say it isnt a fun time..
Rocket - You should look into moving to the South Side. There you'll be a little tougher, you won't have to worry about eating brie and you can be a World Champion Sox Fan. Its great. GO HUSKIES!!!
Thanks for your help. I found out that there is probably a 50/50 chance of staying in Chicago after my training. Chicago is the final destination because the headquarters is there but at this point, all I know for sure is that I'll be there for training. I'm having a hard time finding a company that will let me out of the lease if I need to move without paying lots of cash. So, I'll probably be staying in a hotel for now.

RobertN is right. Right now I'm looking for an apartment but I may still need some of the other sites listed. I did find a good company that has a lot of properties in the Evanston area so if I stay, I think I'll hook up with them.

HD, no brie for me. Only the finest Velveeta logs here!

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I've been to Chicago once a couple years ago and then the company flew me into O'Hare a couple times over the last couple months for interviews but outside of that, I don't know the city. You guys are keeping me from getting stuck in some place I don't want to be.
