Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said.

A plastic surgeon has been summoned.

"He is right now in the (operating room) undergoing some surgery from injuries he received in this accident today," said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma and burns at Mercy Hospital, Uptown. ... He was talking to me before he left for the OR. He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened."

My guess is that Ben will miss the whole season. He needs to be made whole again before getting on the gridiron with 300+ lb. DLs.

Charlie Batch was at the ER according to an article and Charlie better start getting ready for training camp next month...
Oh my gosh. That's terrible news.

You wonder sometimes what people are thinking. 01-wingedeagle
Sadly, if BR needs any type of surgery to repair/rebuild parts of his skull, this could be a career ender. he wont find a reputable plastic surgeon who would sign off on a return to the NFL w/ that kind of surgery and that brings up all kind of insurance, liability considerations. Plus, the extent of injury to both knees seems significant. Bad news for the young man, hope he is OK now, FB is an afterthought...

Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.

Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."

Absolutely awful....you would think after Winslow and Williams players would stay off the bikes....
Ben's injuries are bad but he'll get healed from his broken jay (and nose???), etc..

The knee injuries are bad scraps.

ESPN's John Clayton suggests that he could be ready by the first regular season game.

Wow. I got to see this!!
Bottom line is this was an irresponsible not to mention dumb*** thing to be doing- regardless who is at fault.

Quote- "I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," ...OK- sure Ben.

I feel for the guy but this is really a Homer Simpson move. What gets me is that he's on a RACING bike not a Harley (or a similar "laid back" type) ...your'e leaning forward and definatley NOT laid back. Man...
can't feel bad for stupid people.

Nailed it.

That's why I so rarely express sympathy for any of you.

You'll be hard pressed to find a Miamian today who thinks that Ben did the right thing, but, still, one tends to rally around "family," and we're all hoping for his full and speedy recovery.

he didn't wear a helmet!!!!! Is he SOLDIER TOO, LIKE WINSLOW???? Pure Stupidity. He brought it on himself.
Feel bad for him? Nope. However, I do wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him play on opening day.
Some of the remarks posted here just hit a new low in selfrighteousness.

Godspeed Ben.
I feel terrible for him, those injuries are severe.

I just don't understand why people ever get on bikes WITHOUT helmets. They're dangerous enough with them.

I really feel bad for him, but part of me is just screaming "what the hell were you thinking?"

My thoughts exactly.
Wow! Terry Bradshaw smarter than Big Ben.

Not the time for jokes.
I don't know how much of the injuries Ben suffered would have been preventable by wearing a helmet. Some??

that is NOT the purpose of this post, though.

I have a 3-factor theory of fate:

1). Person shoots self in foot.
2). Someone else shoots person in foot.
3). Person sleeping and a bolt of lightning comes through window and hits person in foot.

To me, these analogies summarize the way bad things can affect people.

Big Ben might have told his coach, "I'm careful, coach" but there are no guarantees that other drivers won't either be reckless, careless or make an honest driving mistake.

I assume Ben was a victim of #2 above.

If it were indeed #2, being on the bike was his bad misfortune.
Let me put it another way. This is something a pastor told us at a meeting a couple months ago. A lot of our problems in life are caused by other people's sins--not our own.

I agree with #2. But why in the world wasn't this lady at least cited and given a ticket? She should of been put in the back of a patrol car and taken down for questioning. Since when do we have a sliding scale of justice? Littlle old ladies always get off when they have a problem with a pro athlete? And then why does the media spin it all out like it is all Roethlisberger's fault for not wearing a helmet? Aren't the facts that if the little old lady had not made a sudden turn into oncoming traffic, that Roethlisberger would have been just fine? Why not mention about the guilt and responsibility of the little old lady. Can somebody explain that me? Is it police agenda? Is it media agenda? What is it? Is it political correctness? What is it?

Isn't a joke from GF68. It's a fact.

Motorcylists are 32 times more likely to die as a result of an accident than a driver/passenger in a car, despite who was at fault. Most die from head injuries; and riders without helmets are three times as likely to suffer head injuries.

I join others in wishing for speedy recovery and hoping Ben demonstrates the better judgement required by his role. His actions no longer affect just himself, but an entire organization.
