I?m a NIU senior art major who loves to follow up on the NIU athletics. I have been following up on the football team most of the time since I transferred from my junior college (Rock Valley College). I realized that this year, NIU football isn?t the only one that I follow. I love to follow up on the NIU women?s track team this year.

Most of you guys who are reading this must be surprised to hear that NIU has a women?s track team. I was surprised to hear that NIU has a track team when I first met my girlfriend (Lindsay Chamberlain), who is a shotput and hammer thrower for the Huskies. I thought it was pretty interesting to know that NIU has a track team even though they don?t have a track to have their meets at home. Every track meet that NIU participates in is definitely a road trip.

So far, I have attended three track meets that NIU participated in (North Central College, University of Illinois, and University of Wisconsin). There are so many good things happening with this NIU women?s track team. There have been six new individual school records broken this year. The Huskies have a strong throwing team of Ashley Morrow, Margaret Gorski, Lindsay Chamberlain, Meagan Guenther, and Jennene Anthony. Of course, there are strong jumpers such as Elizabeth Berquist, Chanel Brown, and Shoshanna Brown. Overall, the whole track team is very competitive.

Not only the track team is labeled as competitive, they are a good group of nice ladies. I have formed new friendships with a lot of these ladies especially after meeting them through my girlfriend. These ladies are filled with a lot of good sportsmanship and they support each other on and off the track.

One of these ladies on the track team recently told me that I am their number one fan because I have been coming to their meets. I responded that I attend the meets because I provide my support towards my girlfriend and the rest of the team.

Nobody knows how well the team is doing because of the lack of media coverage. The lack of media coverage on the track team disappoints me big time. There are only a few articles during the track season, but it is definitely not enough coverage.

If there were more media coverage on the NIU women?s track team, there would have been more fans attending the meets no matter how far it is away from DeKalb. The media is totally blind of how competitive the NIU women?s track team is.
