I suppose it could be the paper that is wrong but I for some reason doubt it. 05-stirthepot Doesn't mention anyone but the ABQ game has ESPN support. Mentions there may not even be a stadium to play in. Looks like things may not be going our way.

Actually the article specifically mentions Birmingham having ESPN support as well. A basic search turns up it is ESPN regional (. I have no idea what Toronto has or not, although I have seen mentions of ESPN "support" in other articles (which is not the same thing as a bankroll btw).

Also, I haven't heard anyone argue against the fact that NM is the front runner. Toronto and/or Birmingham always seem to be mentioned as the 2nd and close 3rd choices. Probably comes down to existing bowls like Houston. So if we get it, great. If not, keep trying.

That being said, don't let facts (especially those from your own quoted article) detract from your regularly scheduled Vandelay, Chryst, MAC, Ohio, (fill in the blank), pissing match though.

I can't tell if we'll get Toronto or B'ham or both but I'm not pessamistic.

All I know is that I have it from someone in the business who said a while ago that the "MAC will have good news on the bowl front. Stay tuned..."

This person knows bowls like eskimos know ice.

Unless something goes terribly wrong, I'm not sweating it.

Once again, I'll repeat what has been said many times, namely, ESPN is commited to Toronto and Birmingham as either doing the TV or owning the bowl (B'ham) or both (that is the B'ham case).

I wouldn't read too much into the statement about the availability of the dome in Toronto.

My hunch, though, is that B'ham in '06 is a fallback position if Houston Bowl goes under or if something happens with the Toronto Bowl.

I do believe that ESPN doesn't want to lose Houston and not have either Toronto or B'ham. ESPN likes doing these games as one of the highlights of their scheduling, bowl season. ESPN loves this wall to wall bowl coverage as each bowl is the lead in to yet another bowl.

and, yes, I take the week off between Christmas and New Years and watch wall to wall bowl games. 02-13-banana

I guess we just have to have faith in Chryst that it will all work out for the MAC.
RobertN, you really need to hang with the Marshall fans, they would love you.

As for the ESPN backing, that info came to me directly from Rick and from my contact (who approves the contracts) from ESPN. Everything this article states I already reported - the New Mexico Bowl is about as solid as can be; Toronto is a little behind but has a chance, and if not, the Birmingham Bowl is set up as a backup plan for us.

We could end up with 4, 3 or stay at 2 bowl bids, and my article reports that. No one knows what the committee will certify until May 1 at the earliest but I am optimistic. I have never stated this is a "done deal."

Last year I correctly stated the MAC would lose out for three bowl births and they did - so where was I "wrong again." You must be swapping semen with GreenBison from the C-USA board.

I'm sorry that NIU didn't get a bowl game last year but that's not my fault - I was rooting for you.
I had an e-mail from a long time e-mail friend who knows as much about the bowl business as eskimos know about ice.

Toronto is now iffy as the article suggests. That one might be too close to predict.

I should have inquired about the B'ham Bowl as a backup and is B'ham Bowl contingent on a). Toronto Bowl not being approved b). Houston Bowl going under.

I'm going with Vandelay that B'ham is a backup in case Toronto's bid fails. My seat of the pants is that B'ham got reeved up as Toronto's bid weakened.

There are a lot of Bowls scenarios on the table:

Houston (Y | N), Toronto (Y | N), N.M (Y | N) and B'ham (Y | N).

I still maintain as I have in other posts, that ESPN has a vested interest to get one or two more bowl bids approved especially if Houston Bowl goes under.
I think if Robert has a problem, he should just add Vandalay to his ignore list. Then again, he won't have anything to b!tch about. Decisions, decisions....

Nah, I enjoy the humor of him coming on here saying it is very close and it is looking pretty good than it flops once again. Much like someone else I know. But that belongs on the Spin room board. ;-)
What a whiny little turd you are. 01-rivals

Hey, if you say something often enough over several years, it is bound to come true eventually. ;-) That has been the case with Nick. After several years of telling us we are getting a third bowl, it finally happens. Congrats to Nick.

Last year he said Toronto was a possibility. This year he said it was a pretty strong possibility. I didn't know that two years was considered "over several years" and I didn't know he ever said it was a done deal last year.

Just admit you were way too hard on him. Be a man for once RobertN!

Vandelay has been very conscientious and amazingly accurate w/ his reporting on this issue. These things typically take a few years to work into place, and Vandelay has been fair in his reporting

Yeah, Vandelay was right on this one.
