I like the officials idea. I will hold back my excitement until something is officially anounced if that is ok?
I still don't support adding more bowls.

Not adding more bowls means MAC teams have to sit home.

Let's build up more good bowls and hope some of the others collapse from the weight of general indifference.

It's better than the alternative. Adding more bowls at this point is going to allow a couple of deserving teams to go bowling. It is not going to bring in undeserving teams. The undeserving teams are the 6-5 teams in the SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big 10, etc and they are already playing in bowl games. So adding a couple of new bowls will be no different that the current amount in terms of how many undeserving teams are playing in bowl games. If adding is the only way we are going to see more deserving 7-4 and 8-4 teams in bowl games than that is what has to be done.
I thought there would be more discussion on this subject

I agree. Of course NIU fans are saying we need 7 bowl tie-ins because the "Ohio" MAC schools will get the first 6 before NIU will ever get a chance. ;-) 05-stirthepot

On a more serious note, Big East fans are talking about stuff too. Some are not thrilled about playing the MAC and C-USA in bowl games. They want to play another BCS school. Some are also saying that they don't see how the Big East could support two more bowl games. I agree that they would have a hard time getting enough eligible. And that is where the MAC comes into the Birmingham Bowl which could give us 4 bowl teams this December. That would be great.
Maybe I misread the article then. All I got is that Chryst is hopeful that the Toronto Bowl would be added- isn't that the exact same place we were last year.

Does the Toronto Bowl have a title sponsor yet? Is there reason to believe it will be added.
ESPN is the title sponsor and owner of the three bowls mentioned - that is huge given their financial resources and power - we didn't have that before in Toronto - that is Rick is more hopeful

personally, I think we get one new bowl bid out of all this
this is a GREAT story.

Appears the stars are finally in alignment and that we have option 1a and 1b.

Looks like our chances of bowl bid #3 are finally REALLY good.

MAC FB is rising with more TV and more bowls.

MAC hoops is... (don't ask). BSU is in meltdown mode now with players and recruits leaving by the bus load.

TV and Bowls and Bowls and TV, and the recruits will come. That's what the game is all about... 03-idea
ESPN is making all of this national TV and bowls happening.

Without ESPN we'd be back to mid 90s (after we lost the Vegas Bowl).

No national TV, no bowls.

Thanks, ESPN.

:shhh: You aren't supposed to question the MAC media mogul guy-Nick. You are just supposed to get all excited to the point where you well, "soil" your pants. Then a short time later, comes the"Oh gee, it looks like it is off again". Don't believe anything until it is official.

You are so negative. I would hate to read your posts after NIU losses a game.

To answer the title sponsor and exact same place we were last year...............as Vandelay said, the International Bowl does have a title sponsor now and it is ESPN Networks. I never heard of a bowl being denied with a title sponsor, and ESPN has a heck of a lot of pull. This bolds very well for a 3rd bowl bid for the MAC. And if you want to keep being negative about it, go ahead but do it on the NIU board. And stop ripping Vandelay. I might not always agree with him, but you are constantly ripping him and he has a lot more "MAC overall" knowledge than most of us do.

I completely agree. These remarks are the same every time he makes a post about the subject and they add absolutely no value. It would benefit us all if he just kept it to the NIU board. It would be a great complement to the Ohio bias discussions.

Funny, I think the same thing about your posts on our board. ;-)

ESPN isn't a title sponsor, they are the owner and operator of the bowl, like they are in the Las Vegas, Honolulu and Fort Worth bowl games. They have to go out and find a title sponsor (which they might already have). The LV Bowl has Pioneer as a title sponsor and Sheraton Hotels sponsored the Hawai'i game. The Fort Worth bowl didn't have a title sponsor last year. The ESPN name means next to nothing in Canada, they have the Canadian version of ESPN Classic, plus ESPN owning interest in Canadian ESPN-clone TSN, so they need to find a sponsor that has interests on both sides of the border. Labatt would be an obvious choice, but I can't see the NCAA allowing an beer brewer to be the title sponsor on a bowl game.

You're right, ESPN is not a title sponsor but they do own the bowl game. To me, that means that the NCAA will most likely certify the games.
Yes, there is a difference between ESPN owning a bowl (several as a poster indicated) and being a title sponser but that is subordinate to the central theme of Vandelay's original post which was that a 3rd bowl is on the horizon and that ESPN has a BIG stake in making it work (they'll own the bowl and TV rights).

NOW for some speculation:

Folks always ask "Why can't Chryst get (or some other term) another bowl?"

Fair enough, but how is he going to get one if one isn't available?

The SOLUTION: Partner with another conference (hint: Big East) and ESPN and see about ESPN owning and televising it (the best of all worlds)

AND try to guarantee to ESPN that the bowl will be financially successful.

How? MAC can guarantee the purchase of X thousand tixs. Big East can do likewise. That is how conferences plow back their 'retained earnings' and invest it in 'bowl creation."

Bingo. MAC and Big East get another Bowl, ESPN makes a few bucks and gets another game to televise.

Everyone happy. 03-idea
Nick,

Does Chryst have a feeling as to how many new bowls might be certified?
Vandelay Wrote:I thought there would be more discussion on this subject

Probably because the Toronto Bowl has been in the works for over 2 years now. It is nice that it sounds closer, but I'll get really excited when I see the Toronto Bowl Logo on the MAC web site.

Actually when your article came out, I was hoping for more detail on the Birmingham Bowl. Nice to know that if the Toronto Bowl doesn't happen, we'll get the Birmingham Bowl. But would be nice to see in writing that if the Birmingham Bowl contracts with Big East, that the MAC is a back-up as well if Big East or C-USA can't provide a team.

Also, Do you have any idea when we'll know when a decision will be made on 6-6 teams versus 7-5 teams for bowl eligibility will be made?
