Didn't bother reading the story due to this equation:

Stephen A. Smith = Lord King A**hat
Stephen A Smith speaks merely so he can hear himself talk. He really loves himself.
Not to mention that if it doesn't involve a person of color, he isn't interested in reporting on it.
Con, thanks for your concern but in 20 years of attending Temple FB practices and games, I have never seen Stephen A. His "coverage" of the last 8 Temple of FB consists of a few interviews w/ our former HC, a HC I might add that once blamed Temple's losing on posters giving away game plans on the internet. The same HC who fired the first of his 5 OC in 8 years for jilting his sister...

That column is brutal. If that is the type of press coverage Golden is going to get, it will take longer to turn that program around.

MH how many rides will be available for Golden in next years recruiting class.
If it is under 16 that will add to the turnaround time.
MH, No problem.

His 1st paragraph review of the Temple neighborhood is interesting though.

Let me guess, he used some over-reaching hyperbole about North Philadelphia being the pit of doom and despair. 03-melodramatic
If this is the coverage that Temple gets, it would be better to get none at all. SAS seems to be a very negative individual and maybe that's why Philly likes his columns. Seems like a jerk to me. 01-wingedeagle

Guess he has to write again now since his ESPN2 show is flopping.

Temple held onto 2 schollies in anticipation of this. We have plenty of ships for next season. I'm also hoping Golden's reputation in the NJ area will bring us a host of quality walkons who we otherwise wouldn't have had in past years
MH,

I don't understand why Golden took the job (although Va's staff seems to be fleeing in great numbers, so that may have something to it) but you have a good coach there. D'Nofrio quality as well. You will get it going .

That being said Stephen A's scathing description of the neighborhood has to kill those who pull the race card out every time one states the obvious. As a minority who lived outdside the campus I don't entirely disagree w/him on this one. They should have moved it out to the main line as proposed years ago but Liacourous nixed that one.
Golden took the job because its a tremendous opportunity to resurrect a program in the 5th biggest market in the country. Its close to home, pays considerably more than he was making at Virginia and if successful, will be a springboard to a more significant offer.

Temple's neighborhood...its terrible BUT, it is rebounding. The campus is surging. If the corrupt politicians who have maintained a stranglehold on Philadelphia's progress for generations can have their attention & schemes diverted to making money off the pending casinos, maybe the area can be gentrified and some of its populace can benefit with jobs, education and resources.
of course, the rest of the population (likely the majority) will be priced out of their neighborhood, churches, schools, and community history. those able to stay will have their pick of fine jobs serving lattes and selling clothes to well heeled young professionals taking advantage of the relatively low rents and rehabbed condos.

ah, gentrification, lived through it, seen it destroy my neighborhood and keep going. of course, if there's a political will to rebuild a neighborhood so that it benefits most of the folks that already live there I'm all for it. nothing wrong with a few more middle class folks fixing some stuff up, but the reality is that gentrification usually ends up becoming a firesale for developers and just displaces poor people off to some other rundown area where they have less support, family and connections.
Stephen A Smith- " The New York Knickerbockers are terrible"

Stephen A Smith on Jeremy Fears- " You couldn't handle of pressure of the MAC and now you want to play in the Big Eastl" "Am I missing something here" "newsflash- DePaul will never win in the Big East"

Stephen A on Kent " They are the San Antonio Spurs of the MAC"

Stephen A on CMU " They make the New York Knicks look like a basketball team"

Stephen A on Ohio " Are U kidding me- You are not gonna win the MAC with a six seven center and a six five power foward"

Stephen A Smith "The New York Knicks are pathetic"
MH55,

I find this difficult to say but I think you got it as to the corrupt nature of the city and what hinders it. You hit it right on the head. That is one of the main reasons Philly is where it is.

Wasn't Milton Street head of the airport and Mayor Johns bro in a mental facitlity not too long ago, not to many years before getting the highest contracted position in the city ? (God, I long for the days when South Phillys Fran Rafferty used to beat the hell out of John on the Council floor and things were handled properly).

Sam Katz has got thank god he lost to this clown and doesn't have to deal w/the corrupt foolish nature of its legislators.
