Quote:Northern Illinois defeats visiting Central Michigan, 68-42
DeKALB, IL -- Just three days after suffering its largest loss this season in Mid-American Conference play, the Northern Illinois University women's basketball squad found a way to register its largest victory margin for the season.

The Huskies used an early 18-2 run to establish a double-digit gap that would never diminish en route to a 68-42 triumph over Central Michigan University in Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon's MAC West Division match-up. The victory helped NIU snap a three-game losing skid which just included a 26-point loss to Eastern Michigan University. In that game, the Eagles ran off to a 20-0 lead as Northern Illinois produced its single worst half of shooting as part of a 63-37 loss. But the victory over CMU enables the Huskies to improve to 10-14 overall and 6-7 in league play while the Chippewas dip to 14-10 and 5-8.

Neither team had much success in the opening minutes, but after the visitors got one of two free throws from Sharonda Hurd, Northern Illinois' Stephanie Raymond (Rockford / Lutheran) sparked an 18-2 surge giving NIU a 15-point lead with 10:10 left before intermission. The Huskies got a pair of 24-point leads before a Casey Manning three-pointer accounted for the 36-15 halftime tally.

"It took quite awhile for NIU to put some points on the board, but then they just took off. They shot the ball incredibly well, played together as a team and played with a lot of heart and desire," CMU coach Eileen Kleinfelter said. "From our side, it certainly wasn't the type of game you want to play late in February with a tight division race winding down. Up until this, I was feeling pretty good about my team and how every single MAC game we've been very competitive. But I didn't see that same team out there today. We were totally taken out of our game."

In contrast to many of Northern Illinois' previous games, it was the opposition struggling with turnovers as the Huskies had a season-low 13 miscues in contrast to CMU's 23 -- 13 of which came in the opening half. "The turnovers in the first half, especially the many travel violations, really took us out of our flow. Northern had 25 points off our turnovers," Kleinfelter noted. "(In the second half), we had our opportunities, even cut it to 14, but those turnovers shot us in the foot even then."

The Chippewas did pull to within 14 twice, the latter coming with 9:41 remaining when Candace Wilson hit a lay-up to make it a 48-34 contest. But the Huskies answered with a 20-6 run that created the game's largest lead of 28 right before Stacey Verhoff hit two last free throws to produce the final tally.

"After Eastern Michigan, we did a lot of soul-searching as a team as to what we do right, what we can do better. We came into this game with defense being our No. 1 emphasis and it lifted our game overall," NIU coach Carol Owens explained. "Offensively, we thoughi if we stayed aggressive and attacked, it would help us. In that respect, I thought Stephanie saw the floor really well."

The junior All-MAC candidate came close to a double-double with 18 points plus nine assists while also tallying three steals and one block. The Huskies, however, were led from the inside by Kristin Wiener (Apple Valley, MN / Academy of our Holy Angels), whose game-best 22 points was accompanied by a game-high three blocks.

"While Northern executed well and passed the ball well, the biggest thing is that they shot the ball extremely well. They got their high-low combination working," Kleinfelter said. "They got the ball into Wiener, who was so very effective. She hit 10-of-12. You'd like to think she'd miss a few more."

For Wiener, it was her second 20-plus outing within the last three games, falling just short of matching her career-best of 24 set in the loss to Kent State University.

"I give all the credit to my teammates, they got me the ball inside and then it's my job to put it in," Wiener said.

While Raymond had 10 points in the first half and Wiener had eight, another plus for Northern Illinois was the off-the-bench spark from Whitney Lowe (Bushnell / Bushnell-Prairie City), whose eight points all came in the opening half in helping the Huskies create their twin-figure lead.

"Whitney did a great job coming off the bench once again. As a six-foot guard, she can post up some smaller guards and with her height, she helps us with our rebounding," Owens added.

Lowe led NIU in rebounding with five boards as the Huskies were outrebounded 32-28, but made up for that by hitting 54 percent (27-of-50) for the game along with .833 at the foul lline (10-of-12). Central Michigan, which was a chilly 23 percent (6-of-23) in the first half, improved only slightly to finish at .313 (15-of-48) from the floor.

Reserve Casey Manning was the lone Chippewa in double figures with 13 while Hurd finished with five points and a game-best 12 rebounds. Northern Illinois heads to the University of Toledo for a Wednesday (Feb. 22) 6 p.m. (CST) contest before a Sunday (Feb. 26) 1:05 p.m. home finale against Western Michigan University.

18 and 9 and she continues to show why she is NIU's second best athlete. While we are 4th in the MAC West we are 6th in the MAC which would set up a home game vs. #11 (Miami) in the 1st round.
Is it proper to use such terms as pound or frigid Chips when decribing women's teams?
