DeKALB - The migration started in full swing following the completion of the 2000 season. The first winning season for the Northern Illinois football program in a decade opened up some doors for its assistant coaches.

When NIU's ‘W' column started getting full, the mass exodus out of the cramped coaching offices in Huskie Stadium reached Indy 500 pace. The quest for more money, prestige, a bigger office, a deeper talent pool and exposure was too enticing to stay in the 60115 zip code.

Northern Illinois 10th-year coach Joe Novak watched his assistants bolt for the I-88 tollway in search of greener pastures all over the country.




Six victories in 2000 equaled three new assistant coaches in 2001.

Six victories in 2001 equaled two new assistants in 2002.

Eight wins in 2002 equaled three new assistants in 2003.

Ten wins in 2003 equaled four new assistants in 2004.

Nine victories in 2004 equaled two new assistants in 2005.



In all, Novak has welcomed 14 new assistant coaches in the last five years. The high turnover rate hasn't affected Novak's winning percentage. The Huskies keep on piling up the victories, even without the continuity most coaches crave on a daily basis.

Forty-five victories in the new millennium suggests the wheels will keep on churning in the cramped offices inside Huskie Stadium.
