Northwestern linebacker Tim McGarigle was charged with two misdemeanors early Monday after attempting to enter a neighbor's house, according to police.
McGarigle, 22, was charged with one count of criminal damage to property and one count of disorderly conduct after police answered a call in Skokie after a homeowner called police at 1:55 a.m.
McGarigle told police he had been at a bar with friends and was dropped near the house, down the street from his home. He said he was disoriented and thought he was trying to enter his house, three doors away.
Police said McGarigle was apologetic and offered to make restitution for a broken window. Damage was estimated at $150. He posted 10 percent of the $1,000 bond and was released. He has a Jan. 5 court date at Cook County Circuit Court in Skokie.
"I'm really sorry," McGarigle said. "I embarrassed my family and the university. I will pay for everything and I don't want this to become a distraction for the team."
McGarigle was bleeding from the ring finger and small finger on his right hand and was treated at Rush North Shore Medical Center and released.
McGarigle, a senior, is Northwestern's all-time leading tackler. The arrest is not expected to affect his availability for Northwestern's bowl game.
"He made a mistake and he's apologized," athletic director Mark Murphy said. "Given the way he's handled it, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't play."
