ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 16, 2005) -- Ohio University's Marching 110, the most exciting band in the land, will be the lead band in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, Thursday, Nov. 24. Only nine other bands will perform during the 2.5-mile parade and only one of those is another university band.

Photo by Rick FaticaNBC and CBS will broadcast the parade into the homes of more than 60 million viewers and more than 2.5 million will watch in person.

The Marching 110 will be in Herald Square at about 10 a.m., when NBC will broadcast a 90-second performance of "Red Light" from the musical "Fame" that will include a dance break. CBS will show the band marching by. They'll also play "Winter Wonderland," "Stand Up and Cheer" and other selections from their season as they march.

Also, visit the Ohio University front door starting Tuesday for behind-the-scenes coverage of the band's trip and photos and stories posted directly from New York City. Follow the Marching 110 members as they depart from Athens, perform their official parade rehearsal (at a very early 3 a.m. in Herald Square!) and sightsee in the Big Apple.

The Macy's band committee, which chooses from nearly 500 bands each year, judges on musical and drill proficiency, previous awards, travel experience, community support, uniforms and band style.

Richard Suk, the band's director since 1996, said he thinks the band was chosen because of their high energy and consistently outstanding performances.

"It plays diversified musical selections, which makes it appealing to a large number of people," Suk said about the band. "I think it's that consistency that makes it attractive to something like Macy's because they know they're going to get a quality performance."

The Marching 110 played in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2000. Other previous prestigious venues include the 1993 inaugural parade for President Clinton and the 2001 appearance at the first New York Giants game after 9/11.

The 110 also peformed in the 2000 Macy's Parade and the Miami band performed in the 2003 Macy's Parade for those that did not know.

When you have a great band but you do not have a football program that consistently takes you to bowl games across the national and Nationally-televised away games, it's a lot harder for the Marching Bands of schools in the MAC to really make a name for themseleves.
Congratulations, this is a great gig for the 110. Unfortunately, at 10am on T/g all us MAC fans will be attending or tuned in to the Akron/Kent Turkey Day Classic on ESPN but maybe we can TIVO the parade 03-wink
The MUMB is going back(according to my understanding) in 2007 or 2008.
They got an invitation back immediately after the parade. I'd imagine that's kinda what happenned with the 110.

And I'd rather see another band from Ohio other than the OSUMB in the Inaugral parade. I get sick of them. 110...MUMB... heck Akron would be better. Well, maybe not Akron.
How about BGSU or Toledo ahead of "The Most Damn Overrated Band in the Land!"

I was under the impression that you have to apply a year or two before you actually appear (bands muct wait 5 years to appear again in the Macy's Parade), but I could be wrong.
You are supposed too... but to my knowledge they invited Miami back. That's what I was told by many people, and I was in the MUMB last year. 03-wink Toledo... um, I'm gonna keep my mouth shut. I have respect for the FMB. But, I'm sorry, the top two bands in the MAC are the MUMB, and the 110. No one comes close. 03-wink
The "fabulous"(?) Marching Golden Flashes will be appearing at the inagural NoDoze Bowl at the Rubber Bowl in Akron on Thanksgiving Day where they will attempt the always difficult task of walking and, yes fans, playing music at the same time. However, music sheets may still be used. Hundreds of fans from the two county area (Summit & Portage for the geographically challenged) will go to the bathroom or buy nachos during their performance.

BGSU has never sought after attendence in such parades. Mark S. Kelly (aka "Chief"), the long-time band director (now retired), found more cost than benefit in pursuing those types of activities for the band.

He found more benefit (as far as recruiting and general PR) in traveling/touring with the "sit-down" bands.

That belief has continued with the current band adminstration.

At the BG/KSU game, I didn't think the Flash band was all that bad. The group had a decent sound as far as balance was concerned. Not a lot of power, but the band didn't have the numbers. They don't have a band with a lot of tradition so they will be a little on the 'weak' side.
It's better than the band that was there when I was in school.......oh, yeah, they didn't have one.

Good for the OU band.
The 110 is one of the best ambassadors Ohio University has to offer. The band has made a name for itself nationally after performing at numerous NFL games, the Macy's Parade, Clinton's 1993 inaugural parade, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. I am so proud of the 110, and I'm so excited that we (as in the OU "we") have been asked to be the lead band this year! It's amazing when I attend the 110's concerts and I see the reactions of the fans and especially those who had never seen the band before. The members are treated like rock stars! It's incredible! 04-rock "Play LONG TRAIN!"
I must agree that when I stepped onto the campus of Ohio University as a student for the first time in 1996 it amazed me how the students and community respect the Marching 110. Coming from a High School where we had the stereotyped "band nerds," it was a slap in the face to see how people respected the 110. You do not see that at many schools; Ohio State, Texas A&M, Tennessee, USC are a few schools that come to mind that have similar reputations. But unlike any of those schools the 110 has NEVER had a football team to take them places.

it's a-comin'!
Hard to believe you forgot "The Band." The UCLA Marching Bruins. They are THE Band. 04-rock

I wish I could march with them.
I don't necessarily agree.

Some might want hot dogs instead. :D

UCLA too. Duh. My bad.
So I guess Solich IS going to have good recruiting in the off season. 03-wink
They are on right now and should perform for the cameras around 10 am. After you watch the 110 switch over to ESPNU for Akron and Kent.
Good job for OU. Last year I heard them and it was the best band I had ever heard in person. I used to play so this is coming from a trained ear.
The sound for their performance was horrible but it was pretty cool to hear Matt Lauer showin some love to his alma mater.
Unfortunately, Matt couldn't remember all the words to the fight song. Oh well, at least he got the first few lines.
