ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 16, 2005) -- Ohio University's Marching 110, the most exciting band in the land, will be the lead band in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, Thursday, Nov. 24. Only nine other bands will perform during the 2.5-mile parade and only one of those is another university band.
Photo by Rick FaticaNBC and CBS will broadcast the parade into the homes of more than 60 million viewers and more than 2.5 million will watch in person.
The Marching 110 will be in Herald Square at about 10 a.m., when NBC will broadcast a 90-second performance of "Red Light" from the musical "Fame" that will include a dance break. CBS will show the band marching by. They'll also play "Winter Wonderland," "Stand Up and Cheer" and other selections from their season as they march.
Also, visit the Ohio University front door starting Tuesday for behind-the-scenes coverage of the band's trip and photos and stories posted directly from New York City. Follow the Marching 110 members as they depart from Athens, perform their official parade rehearsal (at a very early 3 a.m. in Herald Square!) and sightsee in the Big Apple.
The Macy's band committee, which chooses from nearly 500 bands each year, judges on musical and drill proficiency, previous awards, travel experience, community support, uniforms and band style.
Richard Suk, the band's director since 1996, said he thinks the band was chosen because of their high energy and consistently outstanding performances.
"It plays diversified musical selections, which makes it appealing to a large number of people," Suk said about the band. "I think it's that consistency that makes it attractive to something like Macy's because they know they're going to get a quality performance."
The Marching 110 played in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2000. Other previous prestigious venues include the 1993 inaugural parade for President Clinton and the 2001 appearance at the first New York Giants game after 9/11.
