I am a KSU fan and I know that we suck in football and are good to great in everything else. I live in Akron and work here because it is a great place to live and raise a family.

I get a real kick out of people from Hillbilly Athens cracking back on NE Ohio everytime they come up here for a basketball beating from Kent or a football trashing from Akron. Call it a dirty city all you want but it a far better place that Banjo City USA in the Floor Plain.

One thing that I learned last night is that you cannot BUY a football program. They should have gotten a shot on ESPN on Gerry Faust shaking hands with Frank Solich because those guys are one in t he same in what they will do to their college football "second chance schools".

How is Solich going to do recruiting wise in Ohio when the only school he can beat in state is Kent. He may only outrecruit YSU 50% of the time. Solich is a never was and only won with Osborne's talent, which is why he got canned at Nebraska. Husker Nation likes him because he is one of their own, but they stilled canned his ******.

I also chuckle when I hear about how cominant OU is going to be in hoops. You had a good weekend and now you are the best team in the MAC? Please. You still got swept by the Flashes and got thrashed by Akron by 35+ a week before the tournament.
Cake? I didn't know cake would be served. :(
Flashy,

I'm not sure what you're smoking but you want to buy your street drugs from someone else in the future. they are messing with your mind.

there are so many things wrong with your post but i'll just focus on the last thing you wrote...we did not get swept by Kent State last year lest you forget the 80-54 beating we put on you in Athens last January. and no one beat us by 35+ points all year, least of all Akron (who, yes, did sweep us but only beat us by 20, not 35).

as for Akron/Kent being a nicer place than Athens...all i have to say is...are you kidding me?!!

PS-Relative to Coach Solich, when was the last time a coach who had been involved with winning national championships ever coached at kent state? yeah that's what i thought.
This really pisses me off when people bash Solich for winning with only Osbourne's players. He still recruited his players and got to the NATIONAL CHAMIPIONSHIP GAME! You have to have a good coach to make it to the national championship game. Even when he went 7-7, he didn't say "well, thats not gonna happen again...we're still good" he cleaned out his staff and went 9-3 the next season! You can't deny that he coached this team very well and didn't live up to the HIGH expections in Lincoln.

A lot of Osbourne's players were gone by the time the got to the National Championship.... who do you think coached those players that came in and those underclassmen that started playing under Solich. Give some F!%@ing respect dude.

No one expected him to do anything this year....still being very close in the race for the east championship with 2 games to go was much better than anything Knorr did here. Solich is still working with the players that one of the worst head coaches in D1 recruited. I don't know how the hell you can judge him on his coaching ability after one season here.

This really shows how much you really know about football. That or you just trying to bring down any other program you can. Get a life dude.

As for the basketball part.... We had a good weekend? Wow, really scraping at the bottom of the barrell, huh? We had so many freshman and new comers that we started out slow, yes, but we got much better down the stretch and we were and are still a very good team. Kent's not at the top anymore, get over it.

And, next time you try to bash us, check the results from last year... you didn't sweep us.... It was 2-1 us!! WE BEAT YOU TWICE (@ home and in the tourny) you beat us ONCE! And also check your math...yes we got destroyed by Akron, I have no idea what happened that night but we didn't get beat by "35+" last time i checked 69-49 is a 20 point difference (and it wasn't a week before the tournament...whatever you getting at with that point). We also swept Buffalo 3-0

Nice post, dude!! 04-rock 04-rock
04-bow GoCats!
Solich wasn't gonna turn Ohio around in ten games. We won 4 games with a tough schedule this year. Knorr let Ohio fall so far behind in recruiting, it will take years to rebuild the Ohio program.Solich will speed that process. Look at UCF under O'Leary. 0-11 in year 1 and a bowl trip likely in year two. Solich was a late hire, so he missed the peak recruiting season last year. Next years class should be one the the MAC's best based on the number of commits he's gotten so far.

As far as Basketball, Only Miami and Ball State have more banners hanging from the rafters than Ohio. Ohio has been ranked as high as #5 in the AP in basketball during the 1969-1970 season and reached the elite eight in 1964. In Nov 1994 Ohio won the preseason Nit. We didn't just have one good weekend. Look at who, where, and when our losses were last year. Ohio had a 3-6 strech from early Dec to early January last year. 18-4 in the other 22 games. Those six losses early last year were due to the growing pains of playing a freshmen point guard.

What is more amazing is even considering how bad we were under Knorr, we managed to keep decent crowds coming to the games (home and away), managed to knock off a BCS team (albeit Kentucky), and have landed quality recruits such as Scott Mayle, Dion Byrum and Kalvin McRae to name a few. Just imagine what type of recruits Ohio will be able to get if Solich starts having winning seasons. And, oh yeah, Solich is a Cleveland native with recruiting connections on the east coast from during his time at Nebraska and our recruiting coordinator is the same one that we had under Knorr so we did not lose our connections that we had to begin with. We couldn't keep up with Toledo this year because they had more talent than us. But, if Solich finds a way to get Ohio a couple of winning seasons, the next meeting after a couple recruiting classes could be a lot more interesting. That is why I am not focusing on this embarrassing loss at Akron. I am looking to the future. I think Solich can get the job done.
excellent post, bobcatgrad! i couldn't agree more....we need to look past this loss to Akron and think of the brighter days ahead and they are there waiting for us. i have no doubt about that.

Remember the jobs done at Kansas State (by Bill Snider), Virginia Tech (by Frank Beamer), and Florida State (by Bobby Bowden). All of these programs were in the depths of the worst programs in the country (if you don't believe me, get the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia...it's awesome!). all of these coaches were able to turn around bad programs. the same could and can happen at Ohio. keep the faith!

Yep, the bottom line is that you have to give good coaches time to build a program and trying, judging, and convicting them by their accomplishments their first season is ridiculous. Another good example of this is NIU. They won three games in their first three seasons under Novak.
My only concern with OU and Solich is that you guys seemed to slip a bit as the season wore on. You'd expect the team to improve as they got deeper into the schedule (a la WMU) not regress.

Then again. I wasn't playing really close attention...
I'm not sure what this has turned into, but now for my disclaimer that i don't share the opinoin, or the "facts" as they were told. I might agree with the SE ohio area though.. 03-wink

Either way, Ohio's team looks good again this year, even if they do have the proverbial target on their backs.
Good point flipper, but we did play Toledo and @Akron. Those programs are better on the field than Ohio right now. I think the Ohio players didn't know what November football is like. Akron got a taste last year and they handled the big game a lot better than Ohio. Ohio has some holes such as slow team speed. Teams have plenty of game film on Ohio with those 7 tv games, so the trick plays like the reverse to Mayle that Ohio runs 3 times a game isn't gonna surprise anybody. Next year Ohio will have Everson, Jones, and Bower(Illinois transfer) at QB. Mccrae at TB and Mayle at WR. The defense losses Bynum, but most of it is back. Ohio should have more depth as Solich brings in young talent to push the vets.

Hmmm. I'm just thinking it's got a little more to offer than Athens. That might just be me, though. 03-wink
Ignore Flashy. Most Flash posters do...
I live in the Akron area (Green). It's a great place to live. Akron has more to offer than most folks think. Bigbear was kind enough to list some of the great things about the Akron area.

Athens is simply beautiful country and I can see the attraction in living there. It may be out in the country but the scenery is awesome.

Ohio is a pretty cool place to live....
