For a lot of reasons really.....2 11-0, nationally ranked teams (and maybe the 2 best in the state) Morris and Joliet Catholic go at it in the 6A Quarters, and the game lived up to the hype. John Dergo of Morris pretty much won the game and knocked off the JCA empire by himself in one of the great performances in the history of HS football. Against one of the better HS defenses in the nation, Dergo rushed for 366 yards and 3 TD's, threw a 25 yard TD pass, and intercepted 2 passes in the end zone in the 4th quarter to preserve the 28-21 victory for Morris.

It's a shame it wasn't a state title game so that people could see it on TV, but wow.....quite the example of what HS football is all about. Btw, Cary-Grove was also upset by Crystal Lake South 20-14, so a pair of giants fell tonight.
I give credit to morris for their superstar dergo, he is quite impressive. Watching him manhandle multiple teams including my alum yorkville was quite a work of art. However being from yorkville and a avid morris hater, i still must say f'*ck them and they can go fist themselves. I also have my personal reasons....
I agree that that was a classic game. I also agree with Tallguys thoughts on Morris. I'm sure that anyone who has played against them or had their sons play against them feel the same way. Its a given that when you play Morris anything goes.
Speaking of HS football, our home team (Belvidere) is rockin! We spanked E St Charles last night 44-21... It was 30-6 at half. Next up it Mt Prospect. I think we'll make the finals against Mt Carmel. This is the time of the year that it gets really fun watching HS football!
I saw this thread about Morris... the last time I watched them was when Belvidere beat them in 1994 for the State chamionship game!

Go Bucs!

I saw Belvidere face Bolingbrook in the year you are speaking of I believe. That was a decent game that could have turned out different if Bolingbrook didn't commit a penalty of a big kickoff return.
Bolingbrook was the year before 1993 State title game. Belvidere won back to back state titles 93, 94. Bolingbrook had some outstanding players. Belvidere's D is what won that game. I have no idea how we kept two D1 recruits out of the end zone.

I'm always skeptical of NIC-9 Football squads, but Belvidere has a wonderful squad this season. Prospect is looking for their 3rd state title in 5 years, so that should be quite a battle. And I wouldn't shoe in Mt. Carmel as the other finalist, their opponent Edwardsville from down near St. Louis is a powerhouse this year.

Agreed! Being from Morris's rival Plainfield I know it 1st hand. While playing CB down by the end zone I had a couple of 40 year redneck, reject Morris fans M-F-ing me on the field. A HS kid!

The town has absolutely no class, but I have a lot of respect for some of the kids that have come through that program.

It was nice to see the team that has been beating up on my high school for the last 20 years, take down the dynasty that has been stealing kids from my alma mater for the last 20 years! (Alstott, and this year's stud Benson, just to name a few.)

BMX did you go to Belvidere? I graduated from there in 94.
yeah, i'm a 1987 Belvidere grad... and a 1993 NIU grad!!!

I'll definitly be at their game next week (Belvidere that is)

As far as the NIC 9 teams... there's always a tough one or two in the bunch. but besides Belvidere in the last 12 years no one else has brought home the State Champ to the NIC 9.

A few things Scottie. You can't be a rival if you can't beat them Morris has no rival in football like JC. And I'm a Plainfield kid that was "stolen" from JC and I'm glad that I was kidnapped because I got a nice parting gift, TWO STATE RINGS and an education that Fort Beggs Drive could never give. Why would anyone want to play for the Wildcats. That is THE TOWN's HS team and still no one cares how they do. Maybe thats why no one can play with the hill blow for blow. Morris is now 1-5 against JC the last two decades so I guess they were due.
But I do agree no town is more disrespectful trash than the River Rat Morris inbreeds

Could have played for JCA and started my junior and senior year. Me and my buddies made a promise that none of us would jump ship to JCA and go and play at Plainfield. All we did is turn that program around from no winning seasons in 15 years, to starting a streak of 5 consecutive winning seasons.

Yes you got your rings, but my parents couldn't afford to buy my rings. My buddies were close to going, but we stuck together. I applaud JCA, and I don't really buy in to that "recruiting" crap b/c kids go there based on family lineage and to be part of a winning program, and I don't have a problem with that. I was just poking fun at the topic.

We all worked out at Rudy's as well, and as far as the education part goes....shut up. If you haven't noticed we went to the same university, I was on the dean's list for eight straight semesters and graduated from the Business School in 4 years just like most kids. You didn't go there to get a better education, so cut that crap.

Being from Lemont, I know exactly what youre talking about. We have a girl backup kicker and the Morris fans who were sitting in our stands (I dont get why, there were more Lemont people on our side then available space to sit) and they were mf-ing her and making all sorts of sexist comments.
Morris fans are without class. The prior football coach was highly disliked by alot of his peers.

JCA has dominated football for many years by drawing players from a radius of 30 miles including towns like Morris.

The two programs deserve one another, each for very different reasons.

It 's good to have outcomes in rivarly games different that what manyfans have come to expect as a birthright.

Morris winning for me was like snapping the UT hex on NIU.

Like with Morris , Victory will come someday for NIU and be all the sweeter.

Has anyone heard anything from T Thayer who I enjoy as a Bears' announcer but not for his glorification of JCA. It should be a football factory like St Joes is in bball simply on their recruiting abilities alone.

I grow tired and annoyed of the simple minded "recruiting" comments. :crying:

The vast majority of football players and students at JC and other Catholic schools attended parochial grade schools.

Also, succesful programs like Morris and JC don't have to "recruit" or "keep their kids at home". The reputation and winning tradition of the programs do it for them, much like college football (ND, USC, UM, etc). Kids come to the top programs, they don't have to be "talked" into it.
I heard they had 7000 people to watch the Morris/ Joliet Catholic game in a 2000 seat stadium?! And that people were there up 7 hours early to get the good seats.
