CFN 20....NIU 17

That's the way CFN sees it and I got to say that I'm not at all surprised.

I watched the first half of the Ball State game and for the first time in a long time, I was embarassed. NIU played downright terrible...a top tier high school team could of had a chance last saturday against NIU...kind of reminds me of the Sadler days...pure brutality.

I still don't think I've fully recovered from the loss and if the team plays like that against CMU, I might just jump on board the Smetko bandwagon.

This week will go a long way in determining if last week was really a fluke or if we played as bad as we are. I sure hope not the latter.

I blame the defense 1 % for last weeks loss. The offense completely left them on the field most of the game.

I'd go a little higher with 25%, soooo many missed tackles. But you're right the did leave them on the field the entire game. Not to mention the brutal field position they were stuck with.

But, missed tackles has been an NIU defensive trademark for the last 3-4 years 03-confused
Not that it means anything, but Goddard in the Sun-Times picked CMU as well.
I thought the tackling was better earlier in the game. Towards the end it was worse, I'm not sure if it was because they were tired from being on the field practically the whole game, or if it was because they were trying to strip the ball. Maybe both. Not making excuses for it, it has been a problem the last few years, at least.
How many times have we seen an NIU defender meet an opponent in his own back field, and essentially just say "Hello" to him? It hardly makes it worth the trip.

Maybe our defense should visit one of the farms in the DeKalb area and try chasing some pigs.

You mean chickens.

I meant pigs. Pigs are bigger, so they may bear a closer resemblence to tailbacks and receivers than chickens, but we are thinking along the same lines (Be afraid. Be very afraid!).

I think I my idea either borders on genius or insanity. When I was a young kid, visiting my grandfather's farm in Darlington, Wisconsin; one of the pigs from a neighboring farm escaped. All the men and boys then got together, and eventually, we caught the swine, but it was not easy. That pig was very elusive. That's why I think it could be good practice for our defense.

After all, there's a reason why schools in the middle of farming communities (NIU, ISU, Iowa, OSU, Oklahoma, Minnesota) tend to have the best wrestling teams. The athletes are brought up wrestling livestock.

I am not sure that with the offense not performing, we blame the entire loss on the D. It seems to me that the Bears offense is not good and the defense is not allowing 70% of third downs to be converted. The lack of offense exposed just how bad our defense really is. The high powered offense earlier in the year has masked just how bad they are.

I didn't see many that played well on Saturday. That said, BSU did convert a lot of third downs, and I attribute that to BSU having a lot of short third downs to convert.

The D held early, but the effort and tackling seemed to get very questionable once the KO was dropped.

We're saving this drill to prepare for Toledo. :D
Good luck this Saturday! Hope you guys get a great win over the Chips. See ya on November 16, 2005.
Everyone (Nick, the other MAC site, Sun-Times, CFN) picks us to lose except Vegas (-2) and Sagarin (-0.72). Good.
