This is really unfortunate, I would expect an organization that usually reacts after the fact will come down very hard on storming the field rules.

As much as I miss the ripping down the goalposts I have to agree.

Way to many serious injuries over the years that are easily prevented. Fan can celebrate in their seats and go nuts just as well.

I can now understand NIU's decision to supress these celebrations. A girl did get injured after the celebration at NIU win the streak was broken I think?

These celebrations may be even more dangerous at smaller schools where you dont have the mass of humanity around the goal post like you see at a bigger school. Not as many bodies to break the fall and spread out the impact of the falling post.

at the 1999 goalpost fiasco, i saw a girl fall right out of the back of an SUV after they drove over a speed bump. ouch!
I know several schools moved to collapsable goal posts after a couple modestly publicized incidents over the last several years. Those are a smart little invention- the injuries come as a result of a mob of people trying to bring down a large metal object- the collapsable takes bringing it down out of the equation. Just takes a handful of people to dismount it and lay it on the ground before the mob gets there.

Unless we get those- I wouldn't want anyone anywhere near our goalposts. And I say that having been part of a goalpost mob. I was amazed then and am still amazed that there aren't more stories of injuries in those.

Besides- instead of replacing a goalpost or two, they'd just have to fish them out of the lagoon and put them back up.
I think we upgraded to a collapsable goal post a couple years ago.
