On Oct.29,1960,Cal Poly's football team's chartered flight crashed at Toledo Express Airport after take-off.22 of 48 onboard were killed, including 16 players. Cal Poly had just lost to Bowling Green 50-6.
John Madden's fear of flying is attributed to crash.Madden played for Cal Poly in 1957 and 1958.In 1960, he was an assistant coach but stayed behind in California to coach a junior varsity game. Some of Madden's former teammates and friends died in the crash.

Bowling Green plays Fresno State in the Mercy Bowl before 33,145 fans in the Los Angeles Coliseum. The proceeds of the game went to the survivors and the families of the victims of a tragic plane crash that took the lives of 16 members of the Cal. Poly football team on their way home from a game at Bowling Green the previous year.
One of the survivors was Ted Tollner, a Cal Poly player who went on to become the head coach of USC and San Diego State. I believe is still coaching in some capacity in the NFL.(Detroit?)

Everyone in front of Tollner was killed, those behind him survived.

Coming off of the national championship season of 1959, by midseason, the Falcons had themselves in great position to defend their title

Huh? Syracuse won the national championship in 1959.

He's the OC for the Lions (first year).

Memory, like my hair-line is fading.
