I was talking about home field advantage for college teams the other week and I claimed that it's unfair how a OSU can play 8 home games and a UT is stuck with only 6 most of the time. I said that I'd bet that ncaa wide that the home team wins 75% of the games.
Well, last night I heard something to back up my statement. OSU has lost 5 of it's last 6 road games!

Have we ever had 6 home games (or is the norm 5)?
Unfortunately the problem with this is OSU is just such a large, big name school that a lot of the times when they play non conference opponents they can demand that they play at home. So when they play schools from "smaller" conferences like they do yearly against teams from the MAC they will demand to play at home. Well my feeling is that if they were to play a road game against a "smaller" school, during a season that is like this one, they would probably come away with a check in a loss column. I think that they are starting to fear teams like the Rockets and the Falcons more and more. They are starting to realize that the "smaller" schools are becoming a lot tougher and they need every advantage possible.
Ohio State plays every game they can at home because they make a hell of a lot more money playing at Ohio Stadium than playing at the Glass Bowl or the Doyt. As long as the NCAA allows teams to play as many home games as possible, it would be stupid for schools like OSU, scUM, Penn State, etc to ever play on the road. A good example is scUM...they are considering ending their annual game with Notre Dame because they play at ND every other year and if they replace that with a home game, it would be an extra $4 million for the university. You also have to consider that it is better for UT, BG and other MAC schools to play at schools like OSU and scUM, for financial reasons. A couple years ago OSU was scheduled to play AT San Diego State, but SDSU asked that the game be moved to Ohio Stadium because that would bring them more $$$. I know we all hate to admit it, but money plays a major role in these types of decisions. It would be great, as far as football is concerned, for OSU to play at the Glass Bowl or the Doyt, but it just won't happen.

A solution would be for the NCAA to make a rule that limits the number of home games or that requires a certain number of road games to be played. But, we know how much influence the "BCS" schools have, so I don't see that ever happening.

I considered it and don't think that you're necessarily right. It's not like they pay us a million or so to play there.

We did have one season a few years ago with 7 home games. Season tickets cost a little more, but it was money well spent.

We've had a couple of 6 game home seasons as well, but not many.

O'Brien told me that with 12 game seasons starting next year he expects to have 6 home games every year (or at least try to), and maybe even get 7 every now and then.
