PHILADELPHIA – The 2005 Temple University football schedule, featuring seven home games, was announced today by Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. The Owls will compete as an NCAA Division I-A major independent in 2005.

That is a good looking sked for Temple...and 7 home games outta 11.
I find it rather interesting to see 3 MAC teams on the schedule, including ours (Miami U.).
Our athletic department has said nothing offical about a Temple series but lo and behold, we're on their 2005 home schedule. Makes me wonder what else may be up between Temple and the MAC. No way we'd sign a "one and done" deal with Temple, and unless we announce a return visit real soon (we need one more IA home game in 2008 I think), I wonder if we'll just be seeing Temple in a conference game???
Again, I'm no proponent of Temple to the MAC, but with the new attendance rules apparently in place, and Temple desperate for a football "home", I wonder if something may be up. Besides, it makes for more "board fodder" anyway. :D
Temple would be a great addition to the MAC....

I find it cool the press release gave props to UT and MUr will metioning NC State in passing along with MTSU. I'm impressed with the schedule Temple has put togeather after being kicked out of the BE, I can't believe they pulled off 7 home games.
I just don't expect them to win too many.

I do want to bring up a point that many of you may not know..........Temple will be much improved this year and could be pretty good next year.
I know a QB doesn't make the whole team, but they have a junior QB that came over last year as a JC transfer and played the last couple of games. They played very well in those games. This QB, Walter Washington, is of the Josh Harris prototype......he can run and throw the ball. I really have no idea why he decided to go to Temple. Don't laugh them off. They will surprise some teams this year.
Is there not a danger for them to have 7 home games? They have to average 15,000k per game. Might they not be diluting their fan base among 7 game versus 5? Something that struck me. Besides that, it looks like they actually upgraded their schedule from when they were in the Big East. Amazing.

I don't think so. Given their home games:
Maryland (good draw, not too far for Terps to travel)
Toledo (had 21K for Toledo in 2001)
MTSU (this one will probably not draw well)
Miami Florida (always a decent draw for them)
NC State (should be a good draw)
Miami University
Navy (Navy draws well anywhere......Toledo had 36K for Navy in 2001)
Given those home games, the only one that will probably be below or near 15K is MTSU.

If they can get that kind of schedule every year, they may be tempted to stay independent.
I'm not convinced they can... especially if they start improving.
The ACC teams Temple has signed up with are probably willing to forego some money and play in Philadelphia because, hell, it's Temple. A win is a win, and the first goal is to get to six.
So it looks like the ACC has been pretty generous. Hell, three of those teams are playing at Temple. Only two of the games will be in ACC country.
No way that happens every year. It could be a struggle for Temple to assemble five home games in '06.
looks like a 1 or 2 win season... of course thats normal for them...
Great scoop by Greensteve (not sure if he's posted it yet on the Herd boards) as reported by Bill Evans in yesterday's Gloucester County Times. (Philly area). In an article on Temple, he included the following paragraph:
"But Temple is just one year into its 15 year lease at Lincolin Field, and while no agreement is in place for a future conference- there at last appears to be a deal on the horizon that will tie the Owls to bowls games, possibly in conjunction with the Mid American Conference."
Discuss. My questions would:"How, what and why"? I see no reason for the MAC to align in bowls with Temple unless....unless, it helps to get a 3rd bowl, and why would the inclusion of a periennial loser like Temple do that? Well, you got me! :eek:

Since it was yesterday's edition, I think you'll then need to click on the search engine by clicking on "Gloucester Times", then type in "Temple Owls", and then it'll take you to a link for the article called, "At last, Temple has reason for optimism" from 8-11.
P.S. Anyone know where there is an active Temple message board? It'd be interesting to see what they're saying over there.
Clemson is playing Temple because Auburn bought out of a home and home in order to play two home games vs 1-AA teams. Auburn was required to find a 1-A replacement in addition to the fee to buy out of the game.
We'll play @ Temple in '06. There is also a rumor that when the deal was done that it is a two for 1. Temple comes to Clemson twice, with 1 return trip.

That's as active as it gets for Temple. They haven't said a whole lot of valuable information in terms of a conference move. None of them really seem to know what is happening at the University at all. I think part of that is because of a lack of strong leadership at the school.
Here is their message board....I grew up near Philly and take a gander on occassion. While not large in quantity, their fans are as passionate as they come. They have an obsession about the Big East and how they were screwed by them over by not being offered full membership, then being dumped. I hope they have success.

There are some interesting posts on the paid access FB board. Rumors of an ACC alliance for FB scheduling. The MAC rumors persist and seem to have some legs. The Temple BOT has created a task force to determine the best way for football to proceed. A lot is riding on this year's success. We should know the future by January, at latest.
