Full Version: Solution for lagging EMU fan support

Put up a large video screen in the endzone and simulcast away UofM, MSU, ND, WMU and (of course) CMU games!!

Hey, anything for attendence!

You want to stay I-A or not?
My solution:

Pick up and move the whole university to Grand Rapids.

(The new nickname could be "Pyramids.")
It's hopeless. They lost to UConn last year.

It probably is hopeless, despite the fine facilities they've built and the hiring of a good coach. They could go undefeated and no one will be sitting in the shadow of scUM's stadium to see it. Sad, but true.

Georgia Tech had an opponent drop out of a match and scheduled UCONN as a makeup game.

How do you like your Huskie?
- Beaten badly?
- Trounced?
- Humiliated?

I wonder if it'll be as bad as last year's Navy game...
Better watch out GTS. Eastern Michigan didn't even score against UConn!

EMU has an idenity problem. What idiot made their colors Green and White just like Michigan St? Your supposed to pick school colors that will differentiate you state school from the rest in-staters.

I suggest they change their colors to Navy and Green, with eastern written in navy on the helmet. Market the school as THE college team for the Eastern United States.

One thing that would help is to close down the hill at the south end of the stadium. There are more students outside the stadium partying on the hill than inside. Also, I think EMU has a large commuter enrollment who aren't around on the weekends. Bottom line, I doubt they will survive the new NCAA rules.

Like Florida A&M.

I can see Florida A&M from my office at FSU... FAMU less than two miles away...yet The Rattlers average 19K+ in 2001 -- down from 20K+ in 2000...

FAMU is 1-AA...why can't EMU keep up?

Steven.
Well, I'm sure an EMU halftime show doesn't compare to what FAMU puts on...

But that isn't all. Every decision EMU makes stinks, and it goes all the way back the decision to change the name from Michigan Normal.

Other terrible decisions in EMU history:

-- changing the uniforms every two years.
-- changing the uniforms every two years to sad sack imitations of NFL teams.
-- changing the nickname to "Eagles" -- as if there aren't enough sports teams in the world already named "Eagles."

Going Division I was also probably a mistake in the first place. Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Central Michigan and Northern Illinois all made the step up effective 1975. The latter three pulled it off. Eastern Michigan didn't. The football team has had exactly one great season in 26 years. That's it. In retrospect, EMU would have been better off setting membership in the Horizon as its goal.

If attendance issues force the MAC to lose a team, EMU would be the one I'd least miss -- even though BGSU has something of a history with those guys, being another former normal school and all.

EMU has spent money on facilities, but nothing else seems to be working.

Kit-Kat, that navy/green scheme isn't a bad idea, actually. I dont' know if those are the right colors, but the idea is sound. They need to make a break with the past, which is pretty pathetic.
In their slight, indirect, not really but kinda close defense... the most overused mascot is the bulldog.

Fresno St.
Georgia
Miss. St.
James Madison

I could go on - but I need to get back to coding.
Tigers is also a very overused nickname.
Princeton, Clemson, Aubrn, LSU, etc

Wildcats is pretty common too:
Villanova, Northwestern, Kentucky, Arizona etc

Additionally, if any conference has two teams with exactly the same nickname, they ought to be forced to drop one of the teams ---- or have one of those teams change their nickname to stay.

The SEC is the worst when it comes to redundancy:
2 tigers: LSU and Auburn
2 bulldogs: Georgia and Mississippi State
...and that's 4 of their 12 teams!

Considering 6 of their teams have really unique nicknames in the SEC (Volunteers, Commadores, Gamecocks, Gators, Crimson Tide, Razorbacks) - there were a lot of common ones left unused.

Second Worst: The Canadian Football League
10 teams, two of which are the Ottawa Rough Riders and the Saskatewan Roughriders (one has it in two words - one as a single word....yeah, that makes a difference)
For what it's worth, the Ottawa Rough Riders folded a couple of years ago. The new Ottawa Renegades start play tonight.

We have a sports columist here who was always irritated by the Roughriders/Rough Riders thing, and by other cases where nicknames clashed (he was recently griping recently that Norfolk and Milwaukee's AHL hockey teams are both the "Admirals.")

It doesn't bother me. CFL teams date way back. According to the CFL Web site (http://www.cfl.ca), the Rough Riders name was first applied to the Ottawa football team in 1898 and to the team in Regina in 1924. I don't think the national CFL came about until the 1950s or 1960s.

(The same may sort of be true of the Milwaukee and Norfolk hockey teams, which weren't brought together into the same league until last year, when the IHL folded).

What bugs me is that EMU had a chance to establish a new tradition for the school. They looked over the whole landscape of sports, flipped through dictionary, maybe smoked a little pot, held a contest -- and "Eagles" was the best they could do.

That's lame.

"RedHawks" isn't outstanding, but at least it's a little different.

I don't know how well it worked to get attendance up because of Sept. 11 we changed our BSU game to thanksgiving weekend and drew a pathetic 9,000 people.
I also suggested on another topic to go after the visitors fans and convince them to travel (would probably work for UT, BGSU, WMU and CMU the latter two of which have a good alumni base in Detroit). I guess they could try to petition the NCAA to get a waiver to allow drinking in the stadium, probably not but it sounds good and might draw more fans.

If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times: "HURONate on EASTERN!"
