Marshall to take on Wisconsin, Falcons to take on Louisville.

To be charitable, I guess I would call that prediction "interesting", wouldn't you, GreenSteve?

No way the Herd will be back in Detroit, and very unlikely that BG will be playing down south, either. A good BG team is a great fit for Detroit, and playing the B10 will bring out a very good crowd I would think. The Herd faithful don't seem to get too fired up over playing the B10, anyway, and their fans are certainly disdainful of another bowl trip to the frozen north.
If Marshall and BG get the Bowl bids, I would definitely have to think that BG goes to Motor City and Marshall goes to GMAC.
I'd say you're right on target as always, eCK!

In fact, I know I'd be much more fired up about UofL than Wisconsin...and I'm sure John would be more fired up about The Badgers.

I don't know how BUGS fans would travel to Mobile either.

It was an interesting prediction.

FoxSports is clueless.

Here is a much closer much prediction.

Silicon Valley Bowl: Marshall vs. Fresno St.

GMAC Mobile Bowl: UCF vs. So. Miss.

Motor City Bowl: BGSU, Toledo or NIU vs. Purdue, Minnesota or Iowa

Mark it down!

PS: The MAC will go 3-0 in bowls in 2002.

-Nick-
Not to be overly biased, Nick, but UCF comes up to Oxford in late November and I am thinking that the winner of that game may very well be the MAC's third bowl squad. (not to concede anything but for the sake of argument let's say the Herd wins the East and BG wins the West).

I could easily see BG in Detroit, and then Mobile deciding if they want the Herd again, or perhaps would prefer a UCF/Miami/Toledo type choice. In that case the Herd would go out to the SVB.

My "crystal ball" sez that if Miami finishes second in the East (and beats UCF) and manages to pull off a good upset (Iowa) or two (UNC also?) along the way, then I could see them in the SVB vs. Fresno State. Marshall would go back to Mobile and the winner of the MAC West gets Detroit. If UCF beats us and finishes 2nd in the East then I think your scenario (Herd to SVB, UCF to Mobile, and a MAC West participant in the MCB) is very likely.
I think it is very unlikely that the MAC gets three bowls.

If Marshall is ranked at the end of the season, and I believe they will be, I doubt very seriously if Coach Pruett will accept a bid to a small bowl all the way on the left coast against a WAC team. That just isn't going to happen.

Marshall will want a Southern-based bowl where our fans travel well, and our administration wants to go. Dan Angel isn't stupid. This could be our best year ever in football, our administration wouldn't "waste" this year on a minor bowl in California.

My opinion.

GS.
It would be nice to see 3 MAC teams in Bowls.
But, I must agree and say that there will be only two.

Minor Bowl?

The Silicon Valley Bowl has a payout of 1.2 million, while the other two bowls have payouts of $750,000. I think, if offered, Marshall will take the money. As for Miami being that 3rd bowl bid, I could certainly see it. As for 3 bowls? Chryst and the MAC are seriously talking that way, and they never have before. This is the year the MAC gets 3 bowl bids. I'll stand by this prediction.

I come up with up to a 50/50 possibility that the MAC gets three bowls just based on the math (of bowl eligible teams, etc.), and the arrangement we seem to have with the WAC and their bowls (as a back-up to the ACC/B10 in the SVB), but of course I can't account for how many 6-6 BCS teams we might have. You throw in a ranked Herd (if that happens), and the possibilities are probably enhanced somewhat, as they could end up elsewhere (like San Jose), although Mobile would probably grab 'em if they were available and ranked.

Before it's even a remote possibility, the league has to have 3 desirable bowl candidates........and that remains to be seen.

If the MAC honestly has an opportunity for 3 bowl slots, don't you think that the respective schools and the Commish will be looking at this for the collective good? (i.e. do the "right" thing to get 3 teams placed). I do.

The MWC went through this a year or so ago because they didn't have enough guaranteed bowl slots........at the same time if I understand the Mobile contract correctly, if the Herd are available and they want 'em, they'll get 'em......but if the SVB comes a-knockn' I'm sure the Commish and the Herd AD/Head Coach will have a caucus of some sort to come up with some type of "win win" deal.

I read my Graham Allison in grad school; the best predictor of time period "T" is "T - 1."

Marshall doesn't want to stay in the MAC, remember? I am not sure if they would care if the MAC only gets 2 bowl games.
Nick I think your right again. Fresno State expressed interest in playing Marshall last year. I think it will play out close to what you predict.
Marshall accepting a different bowl would certainly be the right thing to do. And I could see Marshall doing that.

They have, after all, done Mobile once. Why get into another bowl rut?

Even if the Herd did pack their bags for CUSA, they chances are fair they would eventually end up in Mobile playing a MAC team again anyway. Meanwhile, the hypothetical Silicon Valley opportunity might not ever come again for the Herd. And it would pay more.

Seems to me it would almost be a toss up for Marshall administrators. While Herd fans might prefer Mobile just as I would prefer Detroit over San Jose, I certainly wouldn't be picky about WHICH bowl we get into.

Is Marshall really at the point where it get could get THAT choosy about Mobile over San Jose?

I'm not sure about that.

This is all weird and hypothetical. I find it hard to believe the MAC could put three teams into bowl games. I hope some of you know what you are talking about.
