What was it???? I think the MAC's attendance will pick up now that the D-1aa's are about done. UCF has 1 coming up.
31,422 if I'm not mistaken

I have absolutely no idea how Marshall officials calculate attendance. I talked to several folks before the official announcement and we all thought there were more like 34k there. The only open spots were in the corners. Quite frankly, I didn't see anyone walk through a turnstile. Maybe they just count the tickets. If so, that misses the count of the students completely. (Of course, I'm assuming students still get in by flashing their ID and activity card. I could be wrong).

While 31k for a I-AA opponent isn't bad, Marshall needs to ensure that every single person that walks into the stadium is counted.

MAKO, I didn't see the Herd game, so I don't know how full the stadium looked, but even with what look like pretty full houses I guess there are always a few empty seats every row in every section, and that adds up. Case in point was the NIU game on TV last week against Wake......I've corresponded with a number of MAC friends who watched the game and none of us can believe that the announced attendance was only 19.K. NIU Stadium holds 31K and it looked almost completely full on both sides with the endzones empty......I had guessed that they had at least 25K at the game, and I'm not prone to exaggerate my "guessimates" on purpose.

Still, overall MAC teams hosting IAA's had good (even exceptional in some cases) attendance this weekend, and due to the collective success (except the Bulls) hopefully they all can build on that with a record year for the MAC in attendance, which should be a no-brainer with UCF coming in and some of the great home games being hosted by MAC teams this year.

That's a plausible explanation for the discrepancy between most folks' estimate of 34k vs. the announced attendance of 31k.

The new NCAA regs allow a school to count every single person that's inside the stadium as in "attendance." By my reading, that includes paid ticket holders, players, coaches, officials, security, ushers, concession stand workers, students, media, etc, etc, etc. (I found the regs once after navigating the terrible NCAA web site for about 30 minutes and I'm not going to go through that exercise again so I ain't a postin' no link to no regs).

I just wonder if Marshall counts everyone or if they just count the number of tickets in the hopper. Of course, your explanation could just as easily be the reason fans estimates were 3k over the official attendance.

Still, I'm pleased that none of the MAC teams dropped below the 15k bubble this weekend. The challenge will be to get 15k in November if the team is 2-7 and it's 25 degrees.
MAKO,
The folks in my area were thinking the same as you...we estimated 33-34K before the announced attendance came. I really doubt they could have gotten another 7-8K in the stadium. We were packed in like sardines in my section. Oh well, 31K isn't terrible for the opener..but it sure looked and sounded like a heck of a lot more!
I was at the BG game on Thursday night. The stadium was almost 3/4 full. Perry holds 30,599.
The anounced attendence was 15,696, it looked closer to 20,000 to me.
This is not the first time that the attendence didn't match up with what the stands looked to have in them. I don't know how they count the people, but it looks to me that they under count the attendence.
The announced crowd was 31,042. That looked right from the TV booth. I said earlier that night to my brother Jim, "Looks like a good crowd. I would call it 31-32." There were some open spots in the corners and some lightly filled spots in the endzone and past the 20s on the home side.

(Remember that we have schools that have "added seats" by restriping the benches to make them narrower.)

My guess is that one of the major differences between a stadium that looks "three-quarters full" and an official sell-out is how tightly people's ass-cheeks are packed together. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
